Trump Launches “Project Freedom” to Assist Ships in Strait of Hormuz
Donald Trump announced a new initiative, “Project Freedom,” aimed at helping neutral commercial vessels stranded in the Strait of Hormuz amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
The operation is designed to support ships caught in restricted waters as a result of the conflict in the region.
Humanitarian Mission to Support Stranded Crews
According to official statements, several countries not directly involved in the Middle East conflict requested U.S. assistance after their vessels became trapped. These ships, described as “innocent bystanders,” are reportedly facing shortages of food and essential supplies.
Trump characterized the initiative as a humanitarian effort, emphasizing the need to ensure safe and sustainable conditions for crews aboard stranded vessels.
Operation Timeline and Objectives
“Project Freedom” is set to begin Monday morning (Middle East time), with the primary goal of guiding ships safely out of the affected area so they can resume normal trade operations.
The mission is also intended to reduce disruptions to global supply chains and restore stability in key shipping routes.
Impact of Hormuz Disruption on Global Energy Markets
Oil prices have surged since late February, when the U.S. and Israel targeted Iran, leading to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The disruption has affected the transport of roughly 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supply, significantly impacting global energy markets.
Although a ceasefire has been in place since April 8, progress toward a lasting resolution remains slow.
Diplomatic Efforts and Ongoing Uncertainty
Iranian officials, including Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei, have cautioned that negotiations with the United States are unlikely to yield immediate results.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical global trade route, and its disruption continues to be a focal point in the broader conflict.
Strategic Importance of the Strait of Hormuz
The U.S. has implemented a blockade in the region to limit Iran’s oil exports, placing additional pressure on its economy. At the same time, Washington has signaled openness to diplomatic solutions, suggesting that ongoing talks could eventually produce a positive outcome.
However, U.S. officials also warned that any interference with “Project Freedom” would be met with a firm response.
