Marvell Shares Rise on Google AI Chip Partnership Talks
Alphabet’s Google is reportedly in discussions with Marvell Technology to develop two advanced chips aimed at improving the efficiency of artificial intelligence models. The news, first reported on Sunday, pushed Marvell shares higher in premarket trading.
By 04:38 ET (08:38 GMT), Marvell stock had climbed 6.3%, reflecting strong investor optimism around the potential partnership.
Two New AI Chips Under Development
According to the report, one of the proposed chips is a memory processing unit designed to complement Google’s existing tensor processing units (TPUs). The second chip would be a next-generation TPU specifically built for AI inference tasks.
The companies are aiming to finalize the design of the memory-focused chip as early as next year, before moving into the testing and production phase.
Google Expands Its AI Hardware Strategy
These talks highlight Google’s broader effort to position its TPUs as a viable alternative to Nvidia’s dominant graphics processing units (GPUs). As artificial intelligence demand continues to grow, TPU sales are becoming an increasingly important contributor to Google Cloud’s revenue.
Shift Toward External TPU Sales
Historically, Google primarily used its TPUs internally. However, this strategy shifted in 2022 when its cloud division took control of external chip distribution, significantly expanding availability to customers.
Since then, Google has accelerated production and increased external sales, even offering TPUs directly for deployment in customer data centers rather than limiting access through its cloud platform.
TorchTPU Initiative Boosts Developer Adoption
Earlier this month, Google introduced TorchTPU, a new initiative aimed at making its chips fully compatible with PyTorch, the world’s most widely used AI development framework.
This move is designed to allow developers to transition existing workloads to TPUs with minimal code changes, removing a major barrier to adoption and strengthening Google’s competitive position in the AI hardware market.
Rising Pressure on Nvidia’s Dominance
By simplifying integration and expanding access, Google is putting increasing pressure on Nvidia’s stronghold in the AI computing space. The potential partnership with Marvell further reinforces its ambition to become a leading player in next-generation AI infrastructure.
