G7 Leaders Maintain Russia Sanctions Despite Middle East Energy Crisis
Leaders of the G7 agreed on Wednesday that the ongoing tensions in the Middle East caused by the U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran do not justify lifting the current sanctions imposed on Russia.
The decision was confirmed by Emmanuel Macron, who hosted the virtual meeting with G7 leaders to discuss the geopolitical crisis and its potential impact on global energy markets.
G7 Discusses Oil Market Disruptions
During the meeting, leaders evaluated how the conflict could disrupt oil supply and increase pressure on global energy prices. Despite the rising concerns about the energy market, the group concluded that existing sanctions on Russia should remain in place.
IEA Announces Record Strategic Oil Release
At the same time, the International Energy Agency (IEA) announced a coordinated release of 400 million barrels of oil from strategic reserves, the largest emergency release in its history.
According to Macron, France will receive approximately 14.5 million barrels from the emergency reserves as part of the coordinated effort to stabilize oil markets.
The release is intended to ease supply disruptions and help contain the recent surge in crude oil prices, which has been driven by the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
