The US dollar remained near a two-week high on Wednesday as investors awaited the Federal Reserve’s latest interest rate decision. Meanwhile, the euro and British pound faced pressure amid growing concerns about European government debt and economic uncertainty.
Global foreign exchange markets are preparing for several major monetary policy announcements, including decisions from the Federal Reserve, European Central Bank (ECB) and Bank of Japan (BOJ).
Persistent inflation, elevated energy prices and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have added uncertainty to the outlook for global interest rates.
US Dollar Holds Firm Ahead of Federal Reserve Decision
The US Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the greenback against six major currencies, traded near 102.40 during Wednesday’s session.
The index had gained approximately 0.3% on Tuesday, reaching its strongest level in nearly two weeks.
Investors have adopted a cautious approach ahead of the conclusion of the Federal Reserve’s two-day monetary policy meeting.
Meanwhile, the benchmark 10-year US Treasury yield hovered around the important 5% level, reflecting expectations that interest rates could remain elevated for longer.
Higher Treasury yields have helped support the dollar as investors assess the possibility of additional monetary tightening.
Fed Interest Rates Expected to Remain Unchanged
Financial markets widely anticipate that the Federal Open Market Committee will maintain its benchmark interest rate between 3.75% and 4.00%.
According to futures market pricing, traders assign a probability of more than 90% to the Federal Reserve leaving rates unchanged at its October meeting.
However, expectations for another interest rate increase remain significant.
Markets are pricing approximately an 80% probability of a 25-basis-point rate hike in December, although these expectations could change following the Fed’s announcement.
Investors will closely examine comments from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh for indications of the central bank’s next policy move.
Persistent inflation, particularly from elevated energy costs, remains a major concern for policymakers.
Any signals suggesting further interest rate increases could strengthen the US dollar against other major currencies.
Euro Struggles as French Debt Concerns Weigh on EUR/USD
The euro remained under pressure against the US dollar, with EUR/USD trading around 1.1128.
Concerns over France’s deteriorating fiscal position continued to weigh on investor confidence, despite a recent decision by Moody’s to maintain the country’s sovereign credit rating.
France’s budget deficit is projected to reach approximately 5.4% of gross domestic product in 2026.
Meanwhile, political uncertainty and public opposition to proposed government spending cuts have complicated efforts to stabilize public finances.
The yield difference between French and German 10-year government bonds has remained unusually wide, reflecting increased investor concerns about French sovereign debt.
Although Moody’s decision provided temporary relief, the broader fiscal outlook continues to present challenges for the euro.
European Central Bank Faces Difficult Inflation Outlook
Investors are also preparing for the European Central Bank’s monetary policy announcement on Thursday.
The ECB is widely expected to maintain its deposit facility rate at 2.50%, following previous interest rate increases.
However, persistent eurozone inflation of approximately 3.8% has complicated the central bank’s policy outlook.
Higher borrowing costs, weakening economic activity and rising energy prices have created difficult conditions for European policymakers.
Investors will focus on comments from ECB President Christine Lagarde for indications of whether additional monetary tightening could become necessary.
A more restrictive monetary policy outlook could provide some support for the euro. However, concerns about economic growth and government debt may continue limiting its recovery.
Israeli Election Uncertainty Weighs on the Shekel
Political developments in Israel also influenced currency markets following Tuesday’s parliamentary election.
The Israeli shekel weakened as early election projections indicated that neither Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s political alliance nor opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot’s bloc had secured a clear parliamentary majority.
The closely contested election has raised the possibility of prolonged coalition negotiations and further political uncertainty.
Investors are particularly concerned about the implications for Israel’s fiscal outlook, security policies and economic stability.
The uncertainty has added pressure to the shekel amid continuing geopolitical tensions across the Middle East.
New Zealand Dollar Drops After Unexpected Central Bank Decision
In Asian currency markets, the New Zealand dollar recorded substantial losses following an unexpected monetary policy decision.
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand maintained its official cash rate at 2.75%, surprising investors who had anticipated another interest rate increase.
The decision triggered a sharp decline in the New Zealand dollar, which fell more than 1% against its US counterpart and traded near $0.5616.
Policymakers voted 4-3 to keep rates unchanged, citing the need to evaluate the economic impact of previous monetary tightening.
Although inflation remains elevated, the central bank emphasized that future interest rate increases will depend on economic developments.
Australian Dollar Gains as Inflation Accelerates
In contrast, the Australian dollar strengthened approximately 0.2% to $0.7036 following the release of stronger inflation figures.
Australia’s consumer price index increased 1.3% during the third quarter, accelerating from the previous quarter’s 0.6% rise.
Annual inflation also remained elevated, reinforcing expectations that the Reserve Bank of Australia could raise interest rates at its next policy meeting.
The latest inflation figures have increased pressure on policymakers to maintain a restrictive monetary policy stance.
Higher interest rate expectations helped support the Australian dollar against the greenback.
Japanese Yen Weakens Ahead of Bank of Japan Meeting
The Japanese yen traded slightly lower against the US dollar, with USD/JPY approaching 157.98.
Investors remained cautious ahead of the Bank of Japan’s monetary policy announcement on Friday.
The central bank’s decision could provide fresh direction for the yen, particularly if policymakers signal additional interest rate increases.
Differences between US and Japanese interest rates remain an important influence on the currency pair.
For now, the US dollar continues to benefit from expectations of relatively restrictive Federal Reserve policy.
However, upcoming decisions from the Fed, ECB and Bank of Japan could generate significant volatility across global foreign exchange markets.
