Supermicro Stock Surges After Strong Preliminary Results

Super Micro Computer shares jumped around 15% in pre-market trading on Wednesday after the company released an unexpectedly strong preliminary fourth-quarter update.

The AI server manufacturer reported a sharp improvement in profit margins and record demand for its infrastructure products.

Supermicro stock initially climbed about 20% in after-hours trading. However, it later gave back some of those gains as analysts highlighted several unresolved risks.

Profit Margins Far Exceed Previous Forecast

Supermicro expects both its GAAP and adjusted gross margins to range between 15% and 17% for the quarter ending June 30, 2026.

That estimate is significantly higher than the company’s previous forecast of between 8.2% and 8.4%.

Management attributed the improvement to a more profitable combination of products and customers during the quarter.

The margin increase changed the market’s view of Supermicro’s profitability, even though expected revenue remained near the lower end of the company’s guidance.

Revenue Expected Near Lower End of Guidance

Supermicro expects quarterly revenue to come in close to the bottom of its forecast range of $11 billion to $12.5 billion.

Normally, weaker-than-expected revenue could disappoint investors. However, the substantial improvement in gross margins attracted far more attention.

Investors also welcomed the company’s strong order activity and expanding delivery pipeline.

Supermicro Backlog Reaches Record High

Supermicro said its order backlog reached an all-time high at the end of fiscal 2026.

The company secured approximately $60 billion in new orders during the fourth quarter alone.

These orders provide Supermicro with a large pipeline of future revenue. Management expects to complete the deliveries over the coming quarters.

Strong demand reflects continued spending on AI servers, data-centre infrastructure and high-performance computing systems.

Analysts Question Whether Margin Growth Is Sustainable

Despite the positive update, some analysts warned investors against assuming that the margin improvement will continue.

Wolfe Research analyst George Notter said the results were encouraging. However, he noted that Supermicro still faces unresolved governance and regulatory concerns.

He also highlighted the company’s history of volatile gross margins.

Changes in customer demand and product mix have previously caused large fluctuations in profitability. Therefore, Wolfe Research is not yet prepared to view the latest margin improvement as a lasting trend.

Nvidia Allocation Remains an Investor Concern

Raymond James analyst Simon Leopold also identified potential risks related to Nvidia product allocations.

Supermicro depends heavily on access to Nvidia’s advanced AI chips for many of its server systems.

Leopold said a possible change in Nvidia’s allocation strategy could create additional uncertainty, although the financial impact would be difficult to estimate.

Supermicro has said its Nvidia allocation has not changed. Nevertheless, the issue could remain a concern for investors.

AI Infrastructure Demand Supports Outlook

The record backlog shows that demand for Supermicro’s AI infrastructure remains strong.

Technology companies, cloud providers and data-centre operators continue to invest heavily in the computing systems required to train and operate artificial intelligence models.

Supermicro has benefited from this trend through its servers, storage systems and liquid-cooling technology.

However, the company must now convert its large order pipeline into revenue while maintaining the stronger profit margins reported in its preliminary update.

Full Supermicro Earnings Report Due August 11
