SK Hynix shares surged to a two-week high on Tuesday, October 27, following reports that the South Korean semiconductor giant is considering a $12 billion special dividend ahead of its third-quarter earnings announcement.

The potential shareholder payout, valued at approximately 16 trillion won, has attracted significant investor interest as artificial intelligence (AI) demand continues to support the memory chip industry.

SK Hynix stock jumped 7.14% to 1,366,000 won during morning trading, reaching its highest level since October 14. The shares also outperformed South Korea’s benchmark KOSPI index, which gained 3.81%.

SK Hynix Shares Rally on $12 Billion Dividend Report

South Korean newspaper Dong-A Ilbo reported Monday that SK Hynix was exploring a special dividend financed by gains from its investment in Japanese memory chip manufacturer Kioxia.

In 2018, SK Hynix invested approximately 4 trillion won in Kioxia through an international consortium led by Bain Capital.

According to the report, proceeds from the company’s Kioxia investment could help fund a substantial cash distribution to shareholders.

However, SK Hynix has not officially confirmed the proposed $12 billion dividend.

In a regulatory filing released Monday, the semiconductor manufacturer acknowledged that it was evaluating several shareholder return initiatives. Nevertheless, management emphasized that no final decisions had been reached.

SK Hynix Earnings Announcement Expected on October 28

Investors are now awaiting SK Hynix’s third-quarter financial results, scheduled for Wednesday, October 28.

The company indicated that additional shareholder return measures would be announced alongside its earnings report, subject to approval from its board of directors.

The potential dividend comes amid growing pressure on major semiconductor manufacturers to distribute more of their earnings to investors.

Strong demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips and other AI-related semiconductor products has helped support profitability across the memory chip industry.

Consequently, shareholders are increasingly focused on how companies such as SK Hynix will balance investment in advanced chip production with cash returns.

AI Chip Demand Supports Shareholder Return Plans

SK Hynix has already outlined an ambitious strategy to increase shareholder distributions.

In August, the company announced plans to repurchase and cancel approximately 40 trillion won worth of its own shares.

Additionally, SK Hynix committed to allocating more than 50% of the free cash flow generated between 2025 and 2027 toward shareholder returns.

These initiatives reflect the company’s efforts to strengthen investor confidence while benefiting from the expanding market for AI infrastructure and advanced memory technology.

Meanwhile, SK Hynix recently suspended plans for a potential US stock market listing of its Solidigm semiconductor subsidiary, citing unfavorable market conditions and increased volatility.

Investors Await Confirmation of SK Hynix Special Dividend

The reported $12 billion payout has provided fresh momentum for SK Hynix shares. However, the proposed dividend remains uncertain until the company officially announces its plans.

Investors will closely monitor Wednesday’s earnings release for details regarding the size, structure and timing of any additional shareholder distributions.

The announcement could also provide further insight into how SK Hynix intends to use the cash generated by strong AI-driven semiconductor demand while maintaining its investment priorities.
