Samsung Considers Major Investment in Mistral AI
Samsung Electronics is reportedly in discussions to invest up to €1 billion, equivalent to approximately $1.14 billion, in French artificial intelligence company Mistral AI.
The potential investment would form part of a broader fundraising round that could value Mistral at around €20 billion, according to a Financial Times report citing people familiar with the negotiations.
Investment Could Reach €1 Billion
Samsung has already supported Mistral through its corporate venture investment division.
The South Korean technology group is now considering a new commitment worth several hundred million euros. However, the final investment could rise to approximately €1 billion if negotiations progress successfully.
Discussions remain ongoing, and the size and terms of the deal could still change.
Mistral Seeks Billions for AI Expansion
Mistral is reportedly aiming to raise several billion euros from investors.
The company plans to use the additional capital to expand its artificial intelligence infrastructure and strengthen its computing capabilities.
Demand for AI infrastructure has increased rapidly as technology companies compete for access to advanced chips, data centres and computing power.
AI Developers Compete for Semiconductor Partnerships
Artificial intelligence developers are increasingly seeking closer relationships with semiconductor manufacturers and technology suppliers.
This trend has become more important due to the global shortage of high-performance computing capacity needed to train and operate advanced AI models.
A potential partnership with Samsung could therefore provide Mistral with both financial support and access to valuable semiconductor expertise.
EQT Fund May Join the Fundraising Round
Swedish investment group EQT is also reportedly considering participating in the fundraising through its Scaleup Europe Fund.
However, the negotiations have not yet been completed. The final group of investors and the fundraising conditions may change before an agreement is reached.
Mistral Positions Itself as a European AI Alternative
Mistral has emerged as one of Europe’s most prominent artificial intelligence startups.
The French company is developing open AI models and expanding its infrastructure as it attempts to compete with major American AI developers.
A multibillion-euro fundraising round could help Mistral strengthen its position in the global AI market while supporting Europe’s efforts to build a more independent artificial intelligence industry.
