PayPal (NASDAQ: PYPL) raised its full-year 2026 profit outlook on Tuesday after reporting stronger-than-expected third-quarter earnings. However, the digital payments giant missed Wall Street’s revenue estimates, highlighting mixed performance across its business operations.

Despite the revenue shortfall, PayPal shares gained approximately 1.2% in early U.S. trading, supported by improving transaction margins and higher earnings expectations.

PayPal Q3 2026 Earnings Beat Wall Street Expectations

PayPal reported adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $1.45, comfortably exceeding analysts’ consensus forecast of $1.31.

Quarterly revenue reached $8.58 billion, representing a 2% increase from the previous year. Excluding foreign exchange movements, revenue growth was approximately 1%.

However, the figure fell short of Wall Street’s expectations of $8.71 billion.

Transaction revenue increased 2.5% to $7.71 billion, reflecting continued activity across PayPal’s payment platforms.

Meanwhile, revenue from other value-added services declined 2.5% to $873 million.

The results suggest that PayPal continues to improve profitability despite relatively modest overall revenue growth.

U.S. Revenue Growth Offsets Weaker International Performance

PayPal’s regional financial performance revealed contrasting trends between its domestic and international markets.

U.S. net revenue climbed 5.2% to $5 billion, demonstrating stronger performance in the company’s home market.

In contrast, international revenue declined 2.2% to $3.58 billion, weighing on overall revenue growth.

Despite these differences, transaction margin dollars increased 2% year-over-year to $3.95 billion.

This improvement highlights PayPal’s ongoing efforts to strengthen transaction economics and increase profitability across its payment services.

Payment Volume and Active Accounts Continue to Grow

PayPal recorded higher transaction activity during the third quarter, supported by continued demand for digital payment services.

Total payment volume increased 6.3% to $487.14 billion, while the number of payment transactions climbed 7.3% to 6.80 billion.

Active customer accounts also edged higher, rising 0.5% to approximately 440 million.

Although account growth remained relatively modest, the increase in transaction activity indicates continued engagement across PayPal’s payment ecosystem.

These figures suggest that existing customers are contributing to transaction growth even as the company’s overall user base expands at a slower pace.

PayPal Improves Operating Margins Despite Rising Costs

PayPal also delivered stronger operating profitability during the quarter.

Adjusted operating income rose 2.9% to $1.61 billion, while the adjusted operating margin improved to 18.8%, compared with 18.6% a year earlier.

However, total operating expenses increased 4.1% to $7.18 billion.

Despite higher expenses, improved transaction margins and cost-saving initiatives helped support earnings performance.

Goldman Sachs analysts noted that PayPal’s quarterly results exceeded expectations, supported by stronger transaction margins and lower-than-anticipated operating expenses.

The investment bank also highlighted the contribution of reduced transaction costs and additional cost savings to the company’s improved profitability.

Meanwhile, adjusted free cash flow declined to $2.05 billion, compared with $2.28 billion during the same period last year.

PayPal Raises Full-Year 2026 Earnings Guidance

Following its earnings beat, PayPal upgraded its financial projections for the remainder of 2026.

The company now expects full-year adjusted earnings of approximately $5.60 per share, up from its previous forecast of $5.38.

The revised outlook also exceeds analysts’ consensus estimate of $5.39 per share.

Additionally, PayPal increased its full-year transaction margin dollars forecast to approximately $15.7 billion, compared with its earlier projection of $15.6 billion.

The company maintained its annual capital expenditure forecast at around $1 billion.

CEO Enrique Lores expressed satisfaction with PayPal’s third-quarter performance, pointing to improving business momentum and stronger expectations for transaction margins and adjusted earnings.

The updated guidance reflects management’s confidence in the company’s ability to maintain profitability improvements despite slower revenue growth.

Fourth-Quarter Outlook Exceeds Analyst Forecasts

Looking ahead, PayPal expects adjusted earnings per share of approximately $1.43 in the fourth quarter, exceeding Wall Street’s consensus estimate of $1.35.

Management also anticipates slightly positive growth in transaction margin dollars, both including and excluding interest earned on customer balances.

The outlook suggests that PayPal expects its profitability initiatives to continue delivering benefits through the final months of 2026.

Nevertheless, the company still faces challenges related to international revenue weakness, modest customer account growth, and declining free cash flow.

Overall, PayPal’s latest quarterly results demonstrate progress in operational efficiency and earnings generation.

For investors, the key question is whether stronger transaction margins and cost management can sustain profit growth while the company works to accelerate revenue and customer expansion.
