Moderna (NASDAQ: MRNA) delivered stronger-than-expected third-quarter 2026 earnings, sending its shares approximately 10% higher. The biotechnology company also raised its annual revenue growth forecast after reporting significant improvements in sales and profitability.

The latest Moderna earnings results exceeded Wall Street estimates, supported by stronger international vaccine demand, lower operating expenses, and continued progress across its pharmaceutical pipeline.

Moderna Earnings Beat Wall Street Expectations

Moderna reported adjusted earnings of $0.38 per share, significantly outperforming analysts’ expectations for a loss of $1.09 per share. This represented a positive earnings surprise of $1.47 per share.

Quarterly revenue reached $1.31 billion, comfortably exceeding the consensus forecast of $892.41 million. Moreover, sales increased 29% from $1.01 billion during the same period in 2025.

The stronger financial performance highlighted Moderna’s improving operational efficiency and its ability to generate revenue beyond initial market expectations.

Moderna Raises 2026 Revenue Growth Forecast

Following its impressive quarterly performance, Moderna increased its full-year 2026 revenue growth outlook to between 15% and 25%. Previously, the company had projected growth of no more than 10%.

Additionally, Moderna substantially upgraded its expected year-end cash position. The company now anticipates holding between $8.1 billion and $8.3 billion in cash, compared with its previous estimate of $4.7 billion to $5.2 billion.

Chief Executive Officer Stéphane Bancel attributed the improved outlook to stronger revenue growth, regulatory achievements, and ongoing cost reductions.

Bancel also highlighted the U.S. approval of mFLUSIVA, Moderna’s fifth approved product worldwide, alongside encouraging Phase 3 clinical results for its melanoma treatment candidate, intismeran.

International COVID-19 Vaccine Sales Support Growth

International markets played an important role in Moderna’s quarterly revenue expansion.

Stronger COVID-19 vaccine sales outside the United States helped boost overall performance. These sales benefited from deliveries associated with long-term government supply agreements and strategic partnerships.

During the third quarter, Moderna generated approximately $780 million in U.S. revenue. Meanwhile, international operations contributed another $533 million.

The results demonstrated the continued importance of overseas vaccine demand to Moderna’s financial performance.

Moderna Returns to Profitability as Research Costs Decline

Another major development in Moderna’s third-quarter earnings was its return to profitability.

The company recorded net income of $162 million, reversing a net loss of $200 million in the corresponding quarter of 2025.

At the same time, research and development expenses declined 27% to $583 million. The reduction primarily reflected lower clinical development spending following the completion of several advanced-stage studies.

Furthermore, Moderna lowered its projected research and development expenditure for 2026 to approximately $2.7 billion, down from its earlier forecast of $2.9 billion.

These cost reductions contributed to the company’s improved financial results and strengthened its outlook for the remainder of the year.

FDA Approval and Melanoma Trial Results Strengthen Moderna’s Pipeline

Beyond its quarterly financial achievements, Moderna reported important developments involving its vaccine and therapeutic portfolio.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved mFLUSIVA for seasonal influenza, marking another regulatory milestone for the biotechnology company.

In addition, Moderna announced positive Phase 3 results for intismeran, its investigational melanoma treatment.

These developments represent progress in Moderna’s efforts to expand its product portfolio and build additional revenue opportunities beyond its established COVID-19 vaccine business.

Moderna Stock Outlook Following Strong Quarterly Results

Moderna’s better-than-expected earnings, upgraded revenue forecast, and improving profitability helped fuel the sharp rally in its share price.

Investors also welcomed the company’s stronger projected cash balance and continued efforts to control research spending.

Looking ahead, Moderna’s performance will depend partly on international vaccine demand, regulatory developments, and the successful commercialization of new products.

Although clinical and commercial uncertainties remain, the latest financial results suggest that Moderna is making progress toward a more diversified and financially sustainable business model.
