Gold Reclaims $4,000 as Oil Slips Ahead of Fed Decision

Gold prices rebounded above $4,000 per ounce on Monday as declining oil prices helped ease inflation concerns ahead of the Federal Reserve’s highly anticipated interest rate decision.

The precious metal recovered after suffering a sharp weekly decline, with investors closely monitoring energy markets, US monetary policy expectations and upcoming economic data.

Spot gold gained 0.7% to $4,022.18 per ounce by 10:57 a.m. Eastern Time, while US gold futures advanced 0.7% to $4,036.05.

The recovery followed a difficult week for bullion, which lost approximately 4.1% and briefly slipped below the psychologically important $4,000 level on Friday for the first time since mid-July.

Gold Prices Recover as Oil Retreats From Recent Highs

The latest rebound in gold prices coincided with a modest decline in global crude oil benchmarks.

Brent crude edged lower on Monday as diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions in the Middle East offered some relief to energy markets.

However, oil prices remained elevated following a 6.2% weekly surge that pushed the global benchmark to its highest weekly closing level since mid-2022.

The recent rally in energy prices had contributed to gold’s weakness by raising concerns about renewed inflationary pressures.

Higher oil prices can increase transportation, manufacturing and production costs, potentially keeping consumer inflation elevated for longer.

Consequently, investors have become increasingly cautious about the outlook for interest rates and the potential implications for precious metals.

Why Rising Oil Prices Can Put Pressure on Gold

Although gold is traditionally viewed as a hedge against inflation, its relationship with rising prices depends heavily on monetary policy expectations.

When energy costs increase, central banks may be forced to maintain restrictive interest rates or introduce additional monetary tightening.

Higher interest rates generally increase the opportunity cost of holding gold because the precious metal does not generate interest or dividend income.

As a result, interest-bearing assets such as government bonds can become relatively more attractive to investors.

Conversely, declining oil prices may reduce inflation concerns and ease expectations for further monetary tightening.

This relationship has become particularly important as financial markets assess whether the Federal Reserve will continue raising interest rates in the coming months.

Federal Reserve Decision Takes Center Stage

Investors are now focusing on the Federal Reserve’s October 27–28 monetary policy meeting.

Financial markets widely expect policymakers to leave benchmark interest rates unchanged when the decision is announced on Wednesday.

However, attention is increasingly shifting toward the central bank’s outlook for December.

According to CME FedWatch data cited in the report, interest rate futures indicated approximately a 78% probability of a rate increase at the December meeting.

Therefore, the Fed’s policy statement and accompanying press conference could significantly influence gold prices, US Treasury yields and the dollar.

Any indication that policymakers are becoming more concerned about persistent inflation could reinforce expectations for additional tightening.

On the other hand, a less restrictive monetary policy outlook could provide support for bullion.

ING Expects Cautious Guidance From Fed Chair Kevin Warsh

Analysts at ING anticipate that Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh may provide limited forward guidance following Wednesday’s monetary policy announcement.

The investment bank expects Warsh to emphasize that the US economy remains relatively resilient, with low unemployment and inflation still above the central bank’s target.

According to ING’s assessment, future interest rate decisions will likely depend on incoming economic data rather than predetermined policy commitments.

The analysts also believe Federal Reserve officials could signal that additional action may be necessary to bring inflation under control.

Such messaging would reinforce the importance of upcoming inflation and employment reports in shaping financial market expectations.

US Inflation Data Could Influence Gold’s Next Move

Recent US consumer and producer inflation readings have exceeded market expectations, suggesting that underlying price pressures remain persistent.

These developments have complicated the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy outlook, particularly as economic growth continues to show resilience.

Investors will receive another important inflation update on Thursday, October 29, when the US Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index is scheduled for release.

The PCE index is one of the Federal Reserve’s preferred measures of inflation and plays an important role in guiding monetary policy decisions.

A stronger-than-expected inflation reading could increase expectations for further interest rate hikes, potentially placing renewed pressure on gold.

Conversely, softer inflation figures could reduce concerns about additional tightening and improve sentiment toward precious metals.

Gold Price Outlook Hinges on Inflation and Fed Policy

Gold’s recovery above $4,000 suggests that buyers are returning following last week’s steep decline.

However, the sustainability of the rebound remains uncertain as investors assess the interaction between energy prices, inflation and US interest rates.

Further declines in crude oil could provide some relief by reducing inflation expectations, while renewed geopolitical tensions could increase volatility across commodity markets.

Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve’s upcoming decision and the latest PCE inflation data are likely to remain central drivers of gold’s near-term direction.

For now, the $4,000 level remains an important psychological reference point for traders as bullion attempts to stabilize after its recent selloff.
