Gold Prices Slip After US Jobs Surprise, Weekly Gain Holds

Gold prices extended their decline on Friday as stronger-than-expected U.S. employment data increased expectations of another Federal Reserve interest rate hike in December.

Despite the latest selling pressure, the precious metal remained on course for a weekly gain exceeding 4%, supported by changing inflation expectations and a sharp decline in global oil prices.

A stronger U.S. dollar and rising Treasury yields added further pressure to bullion following the release of October’s nonfarm payrolls report.

Gold Prices Fall as Strong US Jobs Data Boosts Dollar

Spot gold declined approximately 1.1% to $4,043.78 per ounce by 09:52 ET on Friday. Meanwhile, U.S. gold futures for December delivery dropped 1.5% to $4,052.30 per ounce.

The retreat followed an unexpectedly strong U.S. employment report, which reinforced expectations that the Federal Reserve could tighten monetary policy further.

The U.S. dollar also strengthened against major currencies, making gold more expensive for investors holding other currencies.

Since gold is priced in dollars and does not generate interest income, higher interest rates and a stronger greenback often create unfavorable conditions for the precious metal.

Nevertheless, gold remained positioned for a substantial weekly advance despite Friday’s decline.

US Nonfarm Payrolls Exceed Wall Street Expectations

The U.S. economy added 165,000 jobs in October, significantly exceeding economists’ forecasts of approximately 65,000 new positions.

Furthermore, September’s employment figures were revised upward to 60,000 jobs, indicating stronger labor market conditions than initially reported.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment growth was particularly notable in professional and business services, health care, transportation, and warehousing.

The unemployment rate also declined, providing further evidence of resilience in the American labor market.

The stronger employment figures suggested that the Federal Reserve could have additional flexibility to maintain its restrictive monetary policy stance.

For gold investors, the report raised concerns that borrowing costs could remain elevated for longer than previously anticipated.

Federal Reserve Rate Hike Expectations Rise After Jobs Report

The stronger labor market data reinforced expectations that the Federal Reserve could increase interest rates at its December policy meeting.

Jeffrey Roach, chief economist at LPL Financial, suggested that the employment figures provided sufficient support for policymakers to consider another rate increase.

According to the CME FedWatch Tool, financial markets were pricing in approximately a 75% probability of a 25-basis-point interest rate hike in December.

Those expectations had weakened on Thursday following a severe selloff in U.S. equities, particularly among technology and artificial intelligence companies.

However, the latest jobs report helped restore confidence in the strength of the American economy.

Higher interest rates generally weigh on gold prices because investors can earn more attractive returns from interest-bearing assets, including government bonds.

Consequently, the Federal Reserve’s next policy decision remains an important factor influencing the gold market outlook.

US Stocks Recover as Treasury Yields Move Higher

Financial markets showed signs of stabilization on Friday following Thursday’s sharp technology-sector selloff.

Investors returned to semiconductor stocks, helping the Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500 open higher.

The recovery followed growing concerns about the sustainability of artificial intelligence investment and the potential economic impact of tighter AI regulations.

Meanwhile, U.S. Treasury yields climbed after the stronger employment report.

Both the two-year Treasury yield, which is particularly sensitive to Federal Reserve policy expectations, and the benchmark 10-year yield moved higher.

Because bond yields generally rise when bond prices decline, the movement reflected renewed expectations of tighter monetary conditions.

Higher Treasury yields can reduce demand for gold by increasing the opportunity cost of holding an asset that pays no interest.

However, broader economic uncertainty continues to provide potential support for defensive investments.

Falling Oil Prices and Iran Peace Hopes Support Gold

Developments in global energy markets have also played an important role in shaping gold price expectations.

Crude oil prices remained volatile on Friday but were heading toward substantial weekly declines.

The sharp retreat followed growing hopes that political developments in the United States could encourage efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict with Iran.

Following Democratic victories in the U.S. midterm elections, investors have speculated that lawmakers could increase pressure on President Donald Trump to pursue a diplomatic settlement.

A potential reduction in hostilities could improve oil shipments through the Middle East and reduce concerns about global energy supplies.

Lower oil prices could also ease inflationary pressures, potentially weakening the case for additional Federal Reserve interest rate increases.

Analysts have highlighted the relationship between energy prices, inflation expectations, and gold’s performance.

If declining energy costs encourage a less restrictive monetary policy outlook, gold could benefit despite the immediate pressure created by stronger employment data.

Gold Price Outlook: Weekly Rally Remains Intact

Although gold prices declined following Friday’s employment report, the precious metal remained on track for a weekly increase of more than 4%.

The contrasting performance highlights the competing forces influencing the gold market.

In the near term, stronger economic data, rising Treasury yields, and expectations of further Federal Reserve tightening could continue weighing on bullion.

However, falling oil prices and the possibility of easing geopolitical tensions could reduce inflationary pressures and eventually support a more accommodative monetary policy environment.

Investors will closely monitor upcoming U.S. inflation figures, Federal Reserve commentary, and developments surrounding the Iran conflict.

The direction of the U.S. dollar will also remain important, as further currency strength could limit gold’s recovery.

For now, gold’s expected weekly advance suggests that underlying demand remains resilient despite the latest pullback.

However, whether the precious metal can sustain its upward momentum will depend largely on evolving interest rate expectations and the broader economic outlook.
