Gold prices declined sharply on Thursday as escalating tensions in the Middle East renewed concerns about rising energy costs and persistent inflation. Investors also assessed the Federal Reserve’s interest rate outlook ahead of its upcoming monetary policy meeting.

Spot gold (XAU/USD) fell 1.2% to $4,091.66 per ounce at 00:59 ET (04:59 GMT). Meanwhile, gold futures dropped 1% to $4,107.05.

Other precious metals also experienced significant selling pressure. Silver (XAG/USD) declined 2.8% to $56.3775 per ounce, while platinum (XPT/USD) lost 2.3% to $1,593.95. Palladium (XPD/USD) fell 2.8%.

The US Dollar Index weakened 0.2% to 101.58, although higher Treasury yields continued to weigh on precious metals.

Gold Prices Retreat as Middle East Conflict Raises Inflation Risks

Gold’s latest decline followed a brief recovery in the previous session, when the precious metal gained 0.4% and ended a three-day losing streak.

However, renewed geopolitical tensions quickly reversed that momentum.

Growing concerns about disruptions to Middle Eastern energy supplies have pushed inflation risks back into focus, adding uncertainty to the outlook for global financial markets.

The US State Department ordered non-emergency government employees and their families to depart Saudi Arabia amid concerns about a possible regional escalation.

Meanwhile, a drone attack targeting a Saudi Aramco oil field reportedly killed two people, further intensifying concerns surrounding energy infrastructure security.

These developments increased fears that prolonged instability could disrupt crude oil supplies and maintain upward pressure on energy prices.

Why Are Gold Prices Falling Despite Geopolitical Uncertainty?

Gold traditionally attracts safe-haven demand during geopolitical crises. However, the latest market developments have created competing forces for the precious metal.

While regional tensions may encourage defensive investment, higher oil prices can also contribute to persistent inflation.

If inflation remains elevated, central banks may maintain restrictive monetary policies or introduce additional interest rate increases.

Higher borrowing costs generally create challenges for gold because the metal does not generate interest income.

According to the reported market figures, gold has lost approximately 20% of its value since the US-Iran conflict began in late February.

The conflict has contributed to rising energy prices and renewed concerns about inflation, reducing expectations for monetary policy easing.

Rising US Treasury Yields Add Pressure on Gold

US government bonds also came under selling pressure following the latest Middle East developments.

Treasury prices declined across different maturities, pushing yields higher as investors reassessed inflation risks.

The two-year US Treasury yield reached its highest level in approximately one week.

Rising Treasury yields can make interest-bearing investments more attractive relative to non-yielding assets such as gold.

Consequently, higher bond yields have added another obstacle to a sustained recovery in gold prices.

The combination of geopolitical uncertainty, rising energy costs and elevated interest rate expectations continues to influence precious metals markets.

Federal Reserve Interest Rate Decision in Focus

Investors are now turning their attention to the Federal Reserve’s October 27–28 policy meeting.

Markets largely expect the central bank to leave its benchmark interest rate unchanged.

Recent comments from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh have done little to alter expectations for a pause in monetary tightening.

According to the market pricing cited in the report, traders assign less than a one-in-six probability to a 25-basis-point interest rate increase at the October meeting.

Nevertheless, inflation remains above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target, leaving policymakers facing difficult decisions.

Further increases in energy prices could intensify inflationary pressures and strengthen the argument for maintaining higher interest rates.

Market participants also anticipate the possibility of another rate increase in December.

Weak US Housing Data Complicates the Fed Outlook

Recent US economic indicators have introduced additional uncertainty into the monetary policy outlook.

Housing starts declined in September, suggesting softer construction activity.

Meanwhile, pending home sales fell to a record low, highlighting continued weakness in the residential property market.

These developments could signal that elevated borrowing costs are affecting housing demand and broader economic activity.

However, persistent inflation may limit the Federal Reserve’s ability to respond to economic weakness through lower interest rates.

This tension between slowing economic activity and inflation risks remains an important factor for investors.

What Comes Next for Gold Prices?

The outlook for gold prices will likely depend on developments in the Middle East, US Treasury yields and upcoming Federal Reserve policy decisions.

A further increase in oil prices could reinforce inflation concerns and expectations that interest rates will remain elevated for longer.

Such an environment may continue to pressure gold despite its traditional safe-haven appeal.

Conversely, easing geopolitical tensions, declining bond yields or softer inflation data could help stabilize precious metals markets.

For now, the $4,090 area remains an important near-term reference point following gold’s latest decline, although the reported price alone does not establish a confirmed technical support level.

Investors will closely monitor central bank guidance and geopolitical developments for further indications of gold’s next direction.
