Bitcoin extended its decline on Friday, falling toward $75,000 as growing uncertainty over US cryptocurrency regulation weighed on investor confidence. The world’s largest cryptocurrency surrendered its gains following the US midterm elections, putting it on course for another weekly loss.

The broader cryptocurrency market also came under pressure as investors reduced their exposure to riskier assets. A sharp selloff in technology and artificial intelligence stocks added to the negative sentiment.

Bitcoin dropped 6.3% to approximately $75,566 by 06:06 GMT, reflecting renewed selling pressure across digital assets.

Bitcoin Price Drops as US Regulatory Concerns Intensify

Bitcoin was heading toward a weekly decline of more than 2%, marking its fifth consecutive week of losses.

Initial optimism surrounding the US midterm elections quickly faded as investors assessed the potential consequences of Democratic control of Congress for cryptocurrency regulation.

Several prominent Democratic lawmakers have supported stricter oversight of the digital asset industry. Senator Elizabeth Warren, in particular, has consistently advocated stronger cryptocurrency regulations and greater consumer protections.

Historical Bitcoin performance during periods of Democratic congressional control has been mixed.

Between 2021 and 2022, when Democrats controlled Congress, Bitcoin experienced a decline of approximately 43%. However, the downturn coincided with rising US interest rates and several major cryptocurrency industry failures.

The collapses of Terra, FTX, and Celsius significantly damaged investor confidence during that period, making it difficult to attribute Bitcoin’s losses solely to political developments.

US Crypto Legislation Faces an Uncertain Future

Regulatory uncertainty has become a major concern for cryptocurrency investors following the election results.

The CLARITY Act, a proposed legislative framework designed to establish clearer rules for the US digital asset market, encountered significant political opposition earlier in 2026.

Disagreements over the legislation have raised fresh questions about whether comprehensive cryptocurrency regulation can advance under the incoming Democratic-controlled Congress.

Some Democratic lawmakers have called for tougher anti-money laundering requirements, stronger investor protections, and additional risk management measures.

However, cryptocurrency industry advocates argue that overly restrictive regulations could discourage innovation and limit the growth of blockchain businesses in the United States.

These competing priorities have created uncertainty over the future regulatory environment for Bitcoin and other digital assets.

Riot Platforms Bitcoin Sales Add to Market Pressure

Beyond political developments, Bitcoin faced additional selling pressure following reports concerning major cryptocurrency mining company Riot Platforms.

The company disclosed that it had sold most of its Bitcoin holdings during the third quarter of 2026.

The announcement added to concerns about selling activity from major industry participants at a time when cryptocurrency market sentiment was already weakening.

Combined with broader financial market volatility, these developments have reinforced investor caution toward Bitcoin.

Trump Memecoin Plunges to Record Low After Midterm Elections

Political uncertainty also weighed heavily on the cryptocurrency associated with US President Donald Trump.

The Official Trump memecoin, known as TRUMP, suffered substantial losses after Republicans experienced major setbacks in the US midterm elections.

The token declined more than 22% during the week, reaching an all-time low of approximately $1.116 before recovering slightly on Friday.

Launched around Trump’s inauguration as the 47th US president in January 2025, the cryptocurrency initially attracted significant speculative interest.

TRUMP surged to a record high of approximately $73.43 shortly after its debut. However, its subsequent collapse has erased roughly 98.5% of that peak value.

The sharp decline highlights the volatility of politically linked cryptocurrencies, whose prices can be heavily influenced by investor sentiment and political developments.

Ethereum, XRP and Solana Fall as Crypto Selloff Deepens

The weakness extended across the broader cryptocurrency market as investors reacted to falling technology stocks and growing concerns about artificial intelligence-related investments.

Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, declined 8.6% to approximately $2,223.

Ether was also heading for a weekly loss of 1.5%, marking its sixth consecutive week in negative territory.

Other major altcoins experienced substantial declines.

XRP dropped 8.9%, while BNB lost approximately 3.5%. Solana and Cardano each fell around 7%, reflecting widespread weakness across the digital asset market.

Dogecoin, one of the most widely traded memecoins, also declined 6.6% as speculative demand weakened.

Bitcoin Outlook Remains Clouded by Market Uncertainty

The latest Bitcoin price drop underscores the challenges facing the cryptocurrency market as political uncertainty combines with deteriorating investor sentiment.

The incoming US Congress could play an important role in shaping the future of cryptocurrency regulation, particularly regarding market oversight, investor protection, and digital asset legislation.

Meanwhile, continued weakness in technology stocks could further reduce demand for speculative investments, including cryptocurrencies.

Investors will be watching developments in Washington, institutional cryptocurrency activity, and broader financial market trends for indications of whether Bitcoin can stabilize following its recent losses.

For now, the combination of regulatory concerns and declining risk appetite continues to weigh on the cryptocurrency market.
