Air France-KLM reported stronger-than-expected third-quarter earnings, supported by growing demand for flights to India and Asia and continued expansion of its premium travel services.

The European airline group recorded an operating profit of €1.34 billion, comfortably exceeding analysts’ expectations of €1.1 billion.

However, despite the positive financial performance, Air France-KLM lowered its capacity growth outlook and increased its full-year fuel cost forecast for 2026.

Air France-KLM Q3 Profit Exceeds Market Expectations

Air France-KLM’s third-quarter operating profit reached €1.34 billion, surpassing the company-compiled analyst consensus of €1.1 billion.

Strong passenger demand across strategic international routes contributed significantly to the results.

In particular, non-stop flights connecting Europe with India and other Asian destinations experienced robust demand.

Additionally, the airline’s continued investment in premium travel services helped increase revenue generated per passenger.

Chief Executive Officer Ben Smith attributed the improved performance to strong demand in important markets and effective commercial strategies.

He also emphasized that disciplined cost management and fuel hedging helped maintain relatively stable unit costs despite rising operating expenses.

Premium Travel Demand Supports Airline Revenue Growth

European airlines continue to face challenges from elevated fuel prices and increasing operating costs.

Nevertheless, major network carriers such as Air France-KLM and Lufthansa have benefited from investments in higher-priced premium travel offerings.

These services provide opportunities to generate additional revenue while attracting passengers willing to pay more for improved comfort and flexibility.

Furthermore, fuel hedging strategies have helped airlines manage fluctuations in energy prices and limit their exposure to sudden cost increases.

For Air France-KLM, stronger premium demand and disciplined operating expenses have helped offset some of the financial pressures affecting the European aviation industry.

Air France-KLM Raises 2026 Fuel Cost Forecast to $9.2 Billion

Despite exceeding quarterly profit expectations, Air France-KLM adopted a more cautious approach to its full-year operating outlook.

The company reduced its expected capacity growth for 2026 to approximately 2%, compared with its previous forecast range of 2% to 3%.

The adjustment suggests a more conservative expansion strategy as the airline navigates uncertain operating conditions.

Meanwhile, Air France-KLM increased its projected annual fuel expenditure to $9.2 billion, up from an earlier estimate of $8.9 billion.

The revised forecast reflects continued pressure from aviation fuel expenses, which represent a significant portion of airline operating costs.

However, recent energy market developments have offered some relief.

Spot prices for Northwest European jet fuel declined approximately 12% during the week, reaching their lowest level since August.

The decrease followed a broader retreat in global oil prices, potentially easing some cost pressures if lower fuel prices persist.

KLM Announces Further Workforce Reductions

Separately, Air France-KLM’s Dutch subsidiary, KLM, announced additional workforce reductions as part of its ongoing restructuring programme.

The airline plans to eliminate approximately 1,000 more positions, representing a further substantial reduction in staffing.

Overall, the restructuring initiative is expected to affect around 5,000 positions as KLM works to reduce operating expenses and improve financial performance.

The measures form part of a broader effort to strengthen profitability and improve the airline’s long-term competitiveness.

KLM executive Bas Brouns described the restructuring measures as extensive and potentially difficult for employees.

He emphasized the importance of improving annual earnings by approximately €1 billion to support the company’s financial objectives.

KLM Restructuring Includes Fleet Modernization and Operational Changes

Alongside workforce reductions, KLM is pursuing several operational improvements designed to increase efficiency.

The airline plans to modernize its aircraft fleet while reorganizing activities across multiple business divisions.

These changes will affect ground handling, cargo operations, engineering, and aircraft maintenance.

Fleet modernization could support improved fuel efficiency and help reduce long-term operating expenses.

Meanwhile, restructuring operational departments may allow KLM to streamline processes and allocate resources more effectively.

The initiatives reflect broader efforts among European airlines to maintain profitability while managing labor expenses, fuel costs, and competitive pressures.

Air France-KLM Outlook: Strong Earnings Meet Rising Costs

Air France-KLM’s better-than-expected third-quarter profit highlights the benefits of strong international travel demand and expanding premium services.

However, the higher fuel cost forecast and reduced capacity growth guidance indicate that challenges remain.

The group’s ability to sustain profitability will depend partly on passenger demand, fuel price developments, and continued cost discipline.

At the same time, KLM’s restructuring programme could play an important role in improving the group’s overall financial efficiency.

Investors will continue monitoring future earnings, fuel expenses, and the progress of operational changes to assess Air France-KLM’s financial outlook.
