Trump’s Average Gas Prices Surpass Biden’s Ahead of Midterms

Average gasoline and diesel prices in the United States have risen above the levels recorded during former President Joe Biden’s administration, according to data from AAA. The comparison covers President Donald Trump’s second term and comes as rising fuel costs become an increasingly important issue ahead of the US midterm elections.

With congressional elections scheduled for November 3, higher energy prices could create additional political challenges for Republicans seeking to maintain their narrow majorities in the House of Representatives and Senate.

Trump Gas Prices Edge Above Biden’s Average

AAA figures show that regular gasoline has averaged $3.472 per gallon since Trump returned to the White House in January 2025.

That figure narrowly exceeds the $3.471-per-gallon average recorded throughout Biden’s presidency. Although the difference amounts to just one-tenth of a cent, it marks a notable shift in the comparison between the two administrations.

The White House had not immediately responded to requests for comment on the latest fuel price data.

Diesel Prices Climb as Global Energy Supplies Face Disruptions

The difference becomes more significant when comparing diesel prices, which directly affect transportation, agriculture, manufacturing and international trade.

Under Trump’s second administration, diesel has averaged $4.343 per gallon nationwide, compared with $4.078 during Biden’s presidency.

Furthermore, US diesel prices reached a record high of approximately $6.523 per gallon on September 22.

Ongoing conflicts involving Ukraine and Iran have disrupted global energy supplies, contributing to higher fuel costs and increased uncertainty across international markets.

Because diesel is essential for freight transportation and industrial operations, sustained price increases can also place additional pressure on businesses and consumers.

Rising Fuel Costs Add Pressure Ahead of US Midterm Elections

Higher gasoline prices have become a growing political concern as Americans prepare to vote in the November 3 congressional elections.

Republicans currently hold narrow majorities in both chambers of Congress, making economic issues particularly important as the party seeks to retain control.

Meanwhile, concerns surrounding fuel costs and the broader economy have coincided with a decline in Trump’s public approval ratings.

Trump’s Approval Rating Falls to Record Low

A Reuters/Ipsos survey published on October 19 showed Trump’s approval rating declining to 31%, its lowest level across either of his presidential terms.

The four-day poll recorded a one-percentage-point decrease compared with the survey conducted two weeks earlier.

Public confidence in Trump’s economic management was even weaker. Only 23% of surveyed American adults approved of his handling of the economy.

These findings highlight the political risks associated with rising living costs, particularly as fuel prices remain a visible expense for households and businesses.

With the midterm elections approaching, gasoline prices, inflation and economic confidence could play an important role in shaping voter sentiment.
