US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded their strongest month of 2026 in August as Bitcoin climbed roughly 25%. The rally also helped reduce year-to-date ETF outflows significantly, while Ether and XRP ETFs continued to attract fresh capital.
Bitcoin ETFs Record Their Best Month of 2026
US-listed spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds posted $3.52 billion in net inflows during August, according to SoSoValue data.
That marked the highest monthly inflow total of 2026 and represented a major improvement from July, when Bitcoin ETFs attracted only $172 million.
The surge in ETF demand came alongside a strong performance from Bitcoin itself.
BTC gained approximately 25% during August, according to CoinGlass, making it Bitcoin’s strongest monthly performance since November 2024. During that month, Bitcoin had rallied more than 37%.
However, the strong August momentum did not immediately carry into September.
Bitcoin ETF flows turned negative at the start of the new month, while BTC briefly dropped below $77,000.
August Cuts Bitcoin ETF YTD Outflows by 66%
The $3.52 billion recorded in August helped significantly improve the year-to-date picture for spot Bitcoin ETFs.
Before August, cumulative net outflows for 2026 stood at approximately $5.29 billion.
Following the strong inflows during August, that figure dropped to around $1.77 billion. This represents a reduction of roughly 66%.
Earlier in the year, Bitcoin ETFs experienced several difficult months.
June recorded the largest monthly net outflow at $4.51 billion. May followed with $2.43 billion in outflows, while January saw approximately $1.61 billion leave the funds.
Bitcoin ETF Demand Strengthens Throughout August
The improvement was not driven by only a few strong trading sessions.
Spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded net inflows on 16 of the 21 trading days during August.
The funds also posted nine consecutive days of positive flows between August 17 and August 27.
This sustained buying activity helped lift the total value of assets held by the funds.
Total net assets increased from approximately $76.29 billion at the end of July to $99.61 billion by the end of August.
That represents an increase of around 31% in just one month.
Trading activity also accelerated.
Monthly trading volume rose nearly 49%, climbing from $39.37 billion in July to approximately $58.63 billion in August.
September Begins With $236 Million in Bitcoin ETF Outflows
Despite August’s impressive performance, September started on a weaker note.
US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $236.46 million in net outflows on Tuesday.
That followed $216.70 million in net inflows during the previous trading session.
The withdrawal was the largest daily Bitcoin ETF outflow since July 31, when the funds experienced approximately $265.37 million in net withdrawals.
The reversal coincided with renewed weakness in the Bitcoin price.
BTC briefly fell below $77,000 on Tuesday after trading above $80,000 toward the end of August, according to CoinGecko.
Ether ETFs Turn Positive for 2026
While Bitcoin ETF flows weakened at the beginning of September, spot Ether ETFs remained in positive territory.
Ether ETFs attracted approximately $11 million in net inflows on Tuesday.
More importantly, the strong August performance pushed Ether ETFs into positive territory for the year.
At the end of July, spot Ether ETFs were sitting at roughly $1.12 billion in year-to-date net outflows.
By the end of August, they had recovered to approximately $732 million in year-to-date net inflows.
The turnaround suggests that institutional demand for Ethereum-related investment products strengthened considerably during August.
XRP ETF Inflows Continue to Grow
Spot XRP ETFs also continued to attract capital.
The funds recorded around $14.4 million in net inflows on Tuesday.
Year-to-date inflows reached approximately $502 million by the end of August.
That was up from around $343 million at the end of July, representing growth of roughly 46%.
The increase shows that ETF demand is expanding beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum as investors gain access to a wider range of cryptocurrency investment products.
Crypto ETFs End August With Strong Momentum
August proved to be a major month for cryptocurrency ETFs.
Bitcoin ETFs recorded their strongest monthly inflows of 2026, while Bitcoin itself gained around 25%.
At the same time, Ether ETFs moved back into positive territory for the year, and XRP ETF inflows continued to increase.
However, the early September reversal in Bitcoin ETF flows highlights how quickly market sentiment can change.
Investors will now be watching whether August marked the beginning of a sustained recovery in institutional crypto demand or whether September’s initial weakness develops into a broader pullback.
