Gold Prices Decline as Dollar Strengthens

Gold prices moved lower on Tuesday as the U.S. dollar traded near a one-month high. Investors also remained cautious ahead of the Federal Reserve’s upcoming policy decision.

Spot gold dropped 1.1% to $4,034.31 per ounce by 09:21 ET. Meanwhile, U.S. gold futures fell 1% to $4,034.50 per ounce.

The precious metal had recorded modest gains during the previous two trading sessions.

Stronger Dollar Pressures Gold Demand

The U.S. Dollar Index, which measures the greenback against a group of major currencies, strengthened slightly and remained close to its highest level in around one month.

A stronger dollar usually makes gold more expensive for buyers using other currencies. As a result, international demand for bullion can weaken.

Federal Reserve Decision Takes Center Stage

Markets widely expect the Federal Reserve to leave interest rates unchanged when its two-day meeting concludes on Wednesday.

However, traders have increased their expectations that policymakers could resume monetary tightening later in the year.

According to CME FedWatch data, markets were pricing in approximately a 40% probability of a rate increase this week and an 80% chance of a hike in September.

Investors will closely examine the central bank’s policy statement and comments from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh for clues about the future path of interest rates.

Higher Interest Rates Limit Gold’s Appeal

Analysts said gold remained within a broad trading range as investors waited for clearer guidance from the Federal Reserve.

Higher interest rates generally reduce the attractiveness of gold because the precious metal does not pay interest or generate income.

Therefore, expectations of tighter monetary policy can encourage investors to move toward interest-bearing assets.

US Economic Data Also in Focus

Traders reduced their exposure to gold ahead of several important U.S. economic reports scheduled for later in the week.

These include preliminary second-quarter gross domestic product data and the Federal Reserve’s preferred measure of inflation.

The figures could influence expectations for monetary policy and determine whether interest rates remain elevated for longer.

US-Iran Talks Reduce Safe-Haven Demand

Geopolitical developments also affected demand for safe-haven assets.

U.S. President Donald Trump said Washington was holding productive talks with Iran and suggested that an agreement remained possible.

However, he warned that U.S. military action could resume if negotiations failed.

The United States and Iran maintained a pause in hostilities after strikes were halted over the weekend. The reduced tensions eased concerns about potential supply disruptions.

Falling Oil Prices Ease Inflation Concerns

Crude oil prices extended their sharp decline on Tuesday.

Lower oil prices could reduce immediate concerns about energy-driven inflation and ease pressure on central banks to raise interest rates.

However, reduced geopolitical uncertainty and weaker inflation fears may also limit demand for gold as a safe-haven investment.
