U.S. Stock Futures Fall Ahead of Major Tech Earnings
U.S. stock futures moved lower on Wednesday as investors prepared for a busy round of technology earnings.
Results from Alphabet, Texas Instruments and Tesla could provide fresh insight into artificial intelligence spending, semiconductor demand and the health of the wider technology sector.
Oil prices also climbed as the United States carried out another round of military strikes against Iran.
Wall Street Futures Point to a Cautious Open
Futures linked to the main U.S. stock indices edged lower during early trading.
The decline suggested that investors were becoming more cautious ahead of several closely watched corporate reports.
Technology earnings are expected to shape market expectations about whether the artificial intelligence investment boom can continue.
Wall Street Rebounds Despite Higher Oil Prices
The major Wall Street indices closed higher during the previous session, despite a sharp increase in oil prices linked to the U.S.-Iran conflict.
Rising energy costs pushed interest-rate expectations in a more hawkish direction. Investors became increasingly concerned that higher oil prices could keep inflation elevated and encourage the Federal Reserve to maintain restrictive monetary policy.
However, strong gains in technology stocks helped support the wider market.
Semiconductor Stocks Lead the Rally
Chipmakers were among the strongest performers on Tuesday.
The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rose by 5.21%, marking its best daily performance in around a month.
Semiconductor companies remain at the centre of the artificial intelligence boom because their products power data centres, cloud services and advanced AI models.
Nevertheless, investors continue to question whether the enormous spending on AI infrastructure will produce sufficient long-term returns.
Alphabet Earnings Move Into Focus
Alphabet is scheduled to release its latest quarterly results after the U.S. market closes on Wednesday.
The Google parent company is one of the largest investors in artificial intelligence infrastructure. Its earnings could therefore have a significant influence on technology stocks and wider market sentiment.
Investors will pay particular attention to Alphabet’s capital spending, cloud revenue and comments about future AI investment.
AI Spending Could Reach New Heights
Alphabet and other major technology companies are investing billions of dollars in data centres, advanced chips and computing capacity.
However, the timeline for generating returns from these investments remains uncertain.
BofA Securities analysts believe Alphabet could raise its expected 2026 capital expenditure range by approximately 5%, bringing the total to between $190 billion and $200 billion.
They cited accelerating AI demand, higher memory-chip prices and the company’s recent fundraising activity.
Any reduction in Alphabet’s AI spending plans could affect semiconductor companies and other businesses connected to the artificial intelligence supply chain.
Alphabet Seen as Well Positioned for AI Growth
Despite concerns over rising costs, BofA analysts remain positive about Alphabet’s long-term outlook.
They believe the company is well placed to generate above-average growth and improve profit margins in its cloud business.
Alphabet benefits from a broad AI ecosystem that includes proprietary models, custom chips, consumer products and enterprise services.
Wall Street expects the company to report second-quarter revenue of approximately $101 billion.
Earnings per share are forecast to reach $2.90.
Texas Instruments Could Reveal Chip Demand Trends
Texas Instruments is also scheduled to report its quarterly results on Wednesday.
Although Alphabet may attract more attention, the chipmaker’s performance could provide important information about demand across the semiconductor industry.
Texas Instruments produces analog chips used in a wide variety of electronic devices and industrial systems.
As a result, investors often view its results as an indicator of broader chip-market conditions.
Semiconductor Earnings Expected to Surge
Chipmakers have been among the biggest beneficiaries of rising artificial intelligence investment.
According to LSEG research cited by Reuters, second-quarter earnings among semiconductor and chip-equipment companies in the S&P 500 are expected to rise by 133% compared with the previous year.
These companies could contribute around 44% of the total earnings growth generated by S&P 500 firms during the quarter.
By comparison, overall S&P 500 earnings are forecast to increase by approximately 26%.
The figures highlight the growing importance of semiconductor stocks to the U.S. equity market.
Texas Instruments Provides Revenue Forecast
Texas Instruments expects second-quarter revenue to range between $5 billion and $5.4 billion.
The company has forecast earnings per share of between $1.77 and $2.05.
Its shares have gained more than 64% since the beginning of the year, reflecting strong investor interest in semiconductor companies.
Markets will now look for evidence that underlying demand can justify the stock’s significant rally.
Tesla Investors Prepare for Possible Cash Burn
Tesla is also expected to release its earnings after the closing bell.
Investors are preparing for the possibility that the company may report its first quarterly cash burn in more than two years.
The expected decline in cash flow is linked partly to Elon Musk’s growing focus on artificial intelligence and robotics.
Tesla is investing heavily in autonomous taxis, humanoid robots and other physical AI products.
Tesla Shifts Focus Beyond Electric Vehicles
Tesla’s market valuation increasingly depends on its ability to expand beyond its traditional electric vehicle business.
Investors hope that autonomous driving technology and robotics will eventually become major sources of revenue.
However, the company’s AI infrastructure spending is expected to reach approximately $25 billion this year.
That amount could exceed the quarterly cash generated by Tesla’s automotive and energy operations.
Delays Raise Concerns Over Tesla’s AI Strategy
Several deadlines announced by Musk for new AI and robotics products have already been missed.
These delays have raised questions about the progress of Tesla’s strategic transformation.
Investors will therefore look for clearer timelines, spending guidance and evidence that the company’s AI investments can generate future returns.
Tesla shares have fallen by more than 13% so far in 2026.
Oil Prices Approach a Six-Week High
Oil prices climbed close to six-week highs as the conflict between the United States and Iran continued to intensify.
September Brent crude futures rose by around 3% to $93.73 per barrel.
U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures also gained approximately 3%, reaching $86.91 per barrel.
Both benchmarks were heading for a fourth consecutive daily increase and were trading near their highest levels since June 11.
Oil prices have risen during six of the previous seven sessions.
U.S. Conducts Another Round of Iran Strikes
U.S. forces said they completed an eleventh consecutive night of attacks against Iranian military targets.
The strikes hit missile and drone launch sites, air-defence systems, command centres and other military infrastructure.
The continuing campaign suggested that Washington was increasing military pressure on Tehran.
At the same time, regional mediators were still attempting to revive diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict.
Trump Expresses Doubt About Iran Negotiations
President Donald Trump offered a pessimistic assessment of possible negotiations on Tuesday.
He said the United States had no interest in meeting with Iran, reducing hopes of an immediate diplomatic breakthrough.
The continuing conflict has increased fears of disruptions to Middle East energy supplies and important shipping routes.
Persistent strength in oil prices could increase global inflation risks, pressure financial markets and complicate the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate outlook.
Tech Earnings and Oil Prices Drive Market Sentiment
Investors will closely monitor Alphabet, Texas Instruments and Tesla for new signs about AI spending and technology-sector growth.
At the same time, developments in the Middle East and movements in crude oil prices will remain important for wider market sentiment.
Strong technology earnings could support U.S. stocks. However, rising energy prices and renewed inflation concerns may limit investor confidence.
