Japan-based Metaplanet has expanded its Bitcoin treasury after purchasing another 2,823 BTC during the second quarter of 2026.
The acquisition marks the company’s first reported Bitcoin purchase since April and strengthens its position as one of the world’s largest corporate BTC holders.
Metaplanet Invests $222.6 Million in Bitcoin
According to a company filing released on Thursday, July 2, Metaplanet spent ¥35.89 billion, or approximately $222.6 million, on the latest Bitcoin purchase.
The company acquired the coins at an average price of around ¥12.71 million, equivalent to approximately $78,835 per Bitcoin.
The purchase follows Metaplanet’s acquisition of Siiibo Securities, a move that could help the company introduce Bitcoin yield products in the future.
Metaplanet’s Bitcoin Holdings Reach 43,000 BTC
Following the latest acquisition, Metaplanet now holds a total of 43,000 Bitcoin.
The company has invested approximately ¥659.26 billion, or around $4.08 billion, in building its Bitcoin reserve. Its average purchase price stands at roughly ¥15.33 million per BTC.
Metaplanet held 40,177 BTC at the end of March. By June 30, that figure had increased to 43,000 BTC.
Company Uses Options to Accumulate Bitcoin
Metaplanet said some of its second-quarter purchases were completed through targeted buying strategies involving Bitcoin option sales.
This approach forms part of the company’s wider treasury strategy. It allows Metaplanet to generate income while continuing to increase its Bitcoin holdings.
Following the announcement, Metaplanet shares rose 3.5% and closed Thursday’s trading session at ¥207.
Bitcoin Income Business Generates Strong Revenue
Metaplanet’s Bitcoin Income business generated ¥1.75 billion in revenue during the quarter.
After accounting for that income, the effective cost of the newly acquired Bitcoin declined to approximately ¥34.14 billion.
The adjusted average purchase price was therefore around ¥12.09 million per Bitcoin.
Metaplanet Reports 6.6% BTC Yield
The company’s BTC Yield reached 6.6% during the second quarter.
Metaplanet uses this metric to measure how much its Bitcoin holdings have increased compared with its fully diluted share count.
The figure helps investors assess whether the company’s Bitcoin exposure is growing on a per-share basis as a result of its capital allocation strategy.
Bitcoin Treasury Valued at $2.53 Billion
As of June 30, Metaplanet’s 43,000 BTC reserve was valued at approximately ¥409 billion, or $2.53 billion.
The company said it primarily financed its Bitcoin treasury operations through credit facilities and bond issuances.
Metaplanet also avoided issuing new common shares during the quarter, apart from funds generated through its Bitcoin Income business.
Metaplanet Remains a Major Corporate Bitcoin Holder
Metaplanet is now one of the largest publicly listed corporate Bitcoin holders globally.
The Japanese company remains behind Strategy, led by Michael Saylor, which continues to hold the largest corporate Bitcoin reserve.
Strategy recently disclosed a $35 million Bitcoin purchase before temporarily pausing further acquisitions. The company also indicated that it could potentially sell up to $1.25 billion worth of Bitcoin to support buybacks of its digital credit securities.
Metaplanet’s latest purchase shows that the company remains committed to its long-term Bitcoin treasury strategy despite volatility across the cryptocurrency market.
