Fed Day: Markets Brace for Powell’s Final Chapter
Global markets are focused on a pivotal moment as attention turns to the Federal Reserve and its policy decision. It is increasingly expected that this meeting could mark the final appearance of Jerome Powell as chair.
By the time the Federal Open Market Committee concludes its meeting, the U.S. Senate is anticipated to vote on the confirmation of Kevin Warsh. This transition could usher in a critical new phase for the world’s most influential central bank.
Rate Outlook: No Changes Expected for Now
Market expectations suggest no immediate policy shift. Fed funds futures are currently pricing in a 100% probability that interest rates will remain unchanged, with no significant moves expected until at least 2027.
However, divisions within the Fed appear to be deepening. Investors are closely watching how a potential leadership change could reshape the central bank’s stance—especially as Donald Trump continues to push aggressively for rapid rate cuts.
Powell’s Legacy and Fed Independence
A major point of discussion surrounding Powell’s tenure is his defense of the Fed’s independence despite sustained political pressure. Notably, Trump—who originally appointed Powell—has repeatedly called for looser monetary policy.
It also remains uncertain whether Powell will continue to serve as a Fed governor after his term as chair ends on May 15.
Markets Hold Steady Amid Uncertainty
Global markets showed cautious movement on Wednesday. S&P 500 e-mini futures edged up 0.1%, while MSCI’s Asia-Pacific index (excluding Japan) recovered earlier losses to trade flat.
Investors are balancing central bank uncertainty with geopolitical risks. Tensions between Washington and Tehran continue to weigh on sentiment, with reports suggesting the U.S. is preparing for a prolonged blockade of Iran.
Tech Sector Adds to Market Concerns
Technology stocks provided little support. Asian chipmakers declined after reports that OpenAI missed internal targets for weekly users and revenue. This raised concerns about the sustainability of its heavy investments in AI infrastructure.
The news also pressured U.S. tech-related stocks, including Oracle Corporation and CoreWeave, during previous Wall Street trading sessions.
European Markets Open Mixed
Early trading in Europe reflected the cautious global tone. Pan-European futures and German DAX futures were largely unchanged, while FTSE futures slipped by 0.2%.
M&A Talks Collapse in Spirits Sector
In corporate developments, merger discussions between Pernod Ricard and Brown-Forman—the owner of Jack Daniel’s—have ended after both sides failed to agree on terms.

Economic Data and Debt Auctions
Investors will also monitor key economic indicators from the Eurozone, including money supply (M3), business climate, consumer confidence, and industrial sentiment. Germany is set to release preliminary CPI and HICP data for April.
Additionally, Germany will conduct a 10-year bund auction, which could provide further signals on market demand for sovereign debt.
