Pentagon Details Trump’s Record $1.5 Trillion Defense Budget

The Pentagon on Tuesday released further details of President Donald Trump’s proposed $1.5 trillion defense budget for fiscal year 2027. The plan represents the largest year-over-year increase in U.S. military spending since World War II.

New “Presidential Priorities” Category Introduced

A key addition to the budget is a newly created category labeled “presidential priorities.” This includes major investments in Golden Dome missile defense, drone dominance, artificial intelligence, data infrastructure, and strengthening the defense industrial base.

Officials noted that this category reflects a strategic shift toward modern warfare capabilities and technological superiority.

Defense Spending Surpasses Previous Records

For comparison, Trump requested $892.6 billion for national defense last year, later adding $150 billion through a supplemental request. This pushed total defense spending above $1 trillion for the first time. The new proposal significantly expands on that level.

Massive Investment in Shipbuilding

The budget allocates more than $65 billion for shipbuilding, funding the procurement of 18 warships and 16 support vessels. These will be produced by major contractors including General Dynamics and Huntington Ingalls Industries.

This initiative, branded the “Golden Fleet,” marks the largest U.S. shipbuilding request since 1962.

Expansion of Air Power and Advanced Aircraft

Aircraft procurement and development are also set for a major boost. The budget increases production of Lockheed Martin’s F-35 jets to 85 units per year and allocates $102 billion for aircraft procurement and research and development—a 26% increase from the previous year.

Additionally, funding includes $6.1 billion for Northrop Grumman’s B-21 bomber and continued development of next-generation systems such as Boeing’s F-47 fighter.

Historic Funding for Drone Warfare

The proposal outlines the largest investment in drone and counter-drone capabilities in U.S. history. It includes $53.6 billion for autonomous drone platforms and battlefield logistics, along with $21 billion for munitions and advanced defense systems.

The Defense Autonomous Warfare Group would see its funding surge from approximately $225 million to around $54 billion, reflecting a strong emphasis on deploying existing technologies at scale.

Boosting Production and Military Readiness

The budget also supports multi-year procurement contracts for munitions, aiming to provide stability for defense contractors and their supply chains.

On personnel, the proposal includes pay increases weighted toward junior enlisted troops, with raises of up to 7%. It also plans to expand the U.S. military by 44,000 service members in 2027, following an increase of over 20,000 in 2026.

Iran Conflict Not Yet Funded

Notably, the budget does not include funding for the ongoing conflict with Iran. Pentagon officials indicated that a separate supplemental request will likely be required to cover operational costs and replenishment needs related to the conflict.

Budget Structure and Approval Process

The total $1.5 trillion proposal is divided into a $1.15 trillion base budget and a $350 billion supplemental request. Approval will require a reconciliation process similar to last year’s legislative approach.
