Amazon Expands AI Partnership with Anthropic
Amazon has announced an immediate $5 billion investment in artificial intelligence company Anthropic, with the potential to commit up to an additional $20 billion based on future commercial milestones. This move significantly strengthens the partnership between the two companies, following Amazon’s earlier $8 billion investment.
Massive AWS Commitment and Infrastructure Expansion
As part of the expanded agreement, Anthropic will invest over $100 billion in Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure over the next decade. The company plans to secure up to 5 gigawatts of computing capacity powered by Amazon’s custom Trainium chips to train and operate its Claude AI models.
Advanced Chip Technology at the Core
The collaboration includes access to multiple generations of Amazon’s AI chips, including Trainium2, Trainium3, Trainium4, and future versions. Anthropic will also utilize tens of millions of Amazon’s Graviton CPU cores to support its growing AI workloads.
Additionally, the partnership will expand AI inference capabilities globally, particularly in Asia and Europe, while new Trainium3 capacity is expected to come online within the year.
Amazon’s Growing Custom Chip Business
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy recently highlighted the rapid growth of the company’s custom chip division. According to his shareholder letter, the business has doubled its annual revenue run rate to more than $20 billion, up from $10 billion reported previously.
Jassy also suggested that strong demand for Amazon’s chips could lead to future sales to third-party companies, indicating a broader strategy to compete with established chipmakers like Nvidia.
Seamless Integration for AWS Customers
AWS users will benefit from direct access to Anthropic’s Claude AI platform through their existing AWS accounts. This integration removes the need for separate credentials or billing systems and allows customers to leverage AWS’s built-in security and monitoring tools.
Building on Existing AI Collaboration
Amazon and Anthropic have already worked together on major initiatives such as Project Rainier, one of the world’s largest AI computing clusters, featuring nearly 500,000 Trainium2 chips.
Currently, more than 100,000 customers use Anthropic’s Claude models through Amazon Bedrock, demonstrating the scale of adoption across the AWS ecosystem.
Long-Term Vision for AI Growth
Both companies emphasized the long-term nature of their partnership. Andy Jassy noted that Anthropic’s commitment to running its large language models on AWS for the next decade reflects strong progress in custom AI hardware.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei added that the collaboration will enable continued advancements in AI research while expanding access to Claude for a growing global customer base.
