Trump Team Seeks Tariff Hike From 10% to 15%

Trump Administration Plans to Raise Temporary Tariff to 15%

The Trump administration is preparing to increase the temporary global tariff introduced by President Donald Trump from 10% to 15%, according to a White House official speaking on Tuesday.

The current 10% tariff rate was formally published by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency following a presidential order issued last Friday. However, President Trump has maintained that his preferred rate is 15%, which he publicly announced over the weekend.

According to the official, there has been “no change of heart” from the president regarding the higher tariff level. The temporary duties, set to remain in place for 150 days, were introduced under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974.

These new tariffs are intended to replace the broader global emergency tariffs that were recently struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court. The court’s ruling forced the administration to adjust its trade strategy while maintaining tariff measures through alternative legal mechanisms.

The White House did not provide additional details about when the higher 15% tariff rate could officially take effect. Under current procedures, U.S. Customs and Border Protection can only enforce tariff rates that are formally outlined in presidential executive orders or official proclamations.
