Volkswagen will recall 44,551 ID.4 electric vehicles in the United States through two separate actions linked to potential battery-related fire risks, according to a statement released Tuesday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The larger recall covers 43,881 ID.4 models from the 2023 to 2025 model years. In these vehicles, the high-voltage battery could overheat, increasing the risk of a fire, the agency said. To address the issue, Volkswagen dealers will update the battery management software and replace the battery pack where necessary at no cost to owners.

In a separate action, Volkswagen is recalling an additional 670 ID.4 vehicles from the 2023 and 2024 model years. This recall is tied to a potential fire risk caused by misaligned electrodes in certain high-voltage battery cell modules.

Both recalls are being carried out as a safety precaution, and all required repairs will be completed free of charge.
