Meta Platforms has hired Alan Dye, Apple’s longtime head of human interface design. Apple confirmed the move on Wednesday. The Facebook parent is accelerating its push to build AI-powered consumer devices.
Dye will officially join Meta as chief design officer on December 31. He began his career at Apple in 2006 and has led the human interface design group since 2015.
During his years at Apple, Dye helped shape the design of many major products. His work influenced the Vision Pro headset, the iPhone X, and the Apple Watch. He also guided large redesigns across Apple’s operating systems and core apps.
Meta’s decision to hire Dye highlights the company’s effort to expand beyond social media. The tech giant wants to grow its consumer hardware division and move deeper into the wearables market. This strategy aims to build a broader product lineup, going far beyond smart glasses.
Meta already works with EssilorLuxottica brands Ray-Ban and Oakley to produce AI-powered smart glasses. Bloomberg News first reported Dye’s departure and noted that veteran designer Stephen Lemay will take over his role at Apple.
CEO Tim Cook praised Lemay’s long history at the company. He said Lemay has been involved in nearly every major Apple interface since 1999.
This hiring shift comes during an intense talent battle in Silicon Valley. Major tech firms are competing aggressively to secure top talent and gain an advantage in the accelerating AI race.
Meta has been expanding its teams and partnering with startups to strengthen its position. The company aims to lead the next generation of hardware and software experiences.
Dye’s exit is part of a broader wave of high-profile departures at Apple. Other recent departures include longtime Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams and AI chief John Giannandrea.
