U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that the House of Representatives was prepared to vote later that evening on what he called his “big beautiful bill,” emphasizing that Republicans were unified in supporting the legislation.
“It looks like the House is ready to vote tonight… the Republican House Majority is UNITED, for the Good of our Country, delivering the Biggest Tax Cuts in History and MASSIVE Growth,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
The sweeping tax cut and spending bill, a key component of Trump’s legislative agenda, had already passed the Senate by a narrow margin on Tuesday, with Vice President J.D. Vance casting the tie-breaking vote.
Before a full House vote can take place, lawmakers are currently voting on a procedural rule to allow floor debate on the bill. Trump has publicly set a July 4 deadline for final passage of the legislation.
The proposal has faced strong opposition from Democrats, and has also sparked criticism from some Republican holdouts concerned about its potential impact on the national debt and fiscal sustainability.
Earlier Wednesday, Trump hosted some of the dissenting lawmakers at the White House, afterward saying they had “GREAT conversations all day.”
A recent non-partisan report estimated the legislation could add $3.3 trillion to the federal debt over the next decade, on top of a national debt that already stands at a record-high $36 trillion.
The bill includes an extension of Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, along with additional funding for border security and defense spending—both long-standing priorities of the former president.
