US Space Force Major Advocates for National Defense Strategy Focused on Bitcoin

By Teuta Franjkovic

Major Jason Lowery of the US Space Force has proposed a Bitcoin-based National Defense policy, urging the US to reassess Bitcoin’s strategic importance. Lowery, author and advocate, argues that Bitcoin transcends traditional finance by transforming physical energy into secure digital power, or “watts to secure cyberspace.” He believes Bitcoin provides unique protection for digital assets and intelligence, highlighting its potential to bolster national defense, especially in light of recent political shifts.

Bitcoin as a Strategic Asset in Defense

Major Lowery recently illustrated how Bitcoin’s Proof-of-Work mechanism could revolutionize national defense by providing a secure, peer-to-peer way to protect monetized assets without physical conflict. He claims that Bitcoin’s energy-intensive security model is well justified if it secures valuable data and assets.

Cyber Sovereignty with Bitcoin’s Proof-of-Work

Lowery sees Bitcoin’s Proof-of-Work as crucial to “cyber sovereignty,” a form of security akin to air, land, sea, and space. He argues that Bitcoin represents a fundamental breakthrough in cybersecurity, which has been underappreciated in national defense strategy. Criticizing the Department of Defense’s limited engagement with Bitcoin’s potential, he advocates for proactive research in this field.

Lowery stresses the need to distinguish Bitcoin’s unique attributes from other blockchain technologies, advising policymakers to understand these differences as a foundation for effective national strategies.

Securing America’s Future with Bitcoin

Although he hasn’t publicly commented on Senator Lummis’s recent proposal for a US Bitcoin reserve, Lowery suggests that holding limited reserves may not meet national security needs. Instead, he proposes establishing a strong US-based hashing industry, or “US Hash Force,” to ensure reliable access to Bitcoin, similar to the Space Force’s support for commercial space access.BTC power projection

In his thesis, Lowery calls Bitcoin “the most efficient non-kinetic power projection tool” and a “Mutually Assured Preservation” mechanism. He aims to influence defense agencies to recognize Bitcoin as a strategic asset, essential for national defense and global peace.
