U.S. to Suspend Tech Restrictions on Chinese Firms for One Year
The United States will suspend for one year a recent policy that expanded restrictions on Chinese companies accessing U.S. technology, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced on Thursday.
The decision was reached during the summit between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, where both sides agreed to ease tensions over trade and technology. In return, China will delay its planned export restrictions on rare earth minerals for one year.
“Yes, we are going to be suspending that for a year in return for the suspension on the rare earth licensing regime,” Bessent said during an interview on Fox Business Network, confirming the arrangement.
The suspended regulation, known as the “affiliates rule,” was introduced by the Trump administration on September 29. It barred Chinese firms that are 50% or more owned by previously sanctioned entities from receiving U.S. technology exports — a measure that had drawn strong opposition from Beijing.
