Trump to Discuss Nvidia’s Blackwell AI Chip with China’s Xi

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he plans to discuss Nvidia’s flagship AI chip, Blackwell, during his upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this week.

Trump’s comments came as global markets reacted positively, with Wall Street futures extending gains in Asian trading.
Nasdaq 100 futures were up 0.3% by 22:46 ET (02:46 GMT) following his remarks.

Trump Praises Nvidia and CEO Jensen Huang

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump praised Nvidia Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) and its CEO Jensen Huang, calling the company’s AI chip “amazing” and its work “unbelievable.”

“We will be speaking about Blackwell,” Trump said when asked if U.S.-China chip restrictions would be discussed during his meeting with Xi.

His comments follow remarks by Nvidia’s Huang, who spoke at the company’s first developer conference in Washington, praising Trump and expressing confidence that the U.S. can win the global AI race — even with Chinese developers using Nvidia chips.

Nvidia Surges as U.S.-China Chip Tensions Continue

Nvidia shares hit a record high on Tuesday, supported by Huang’s optimistic tone and his pledge for more investment in the United States.

The company has been blocked from selling its Blackwell chips in China, as Beijing reacted to Washington’s export restrictions, which limit sales of advanced AI processors.
Under current U.S. rules, Nvidia can only export lower-performance chips to Chinese markets.

Trade and Chip Restrictions Remain Key Tensions

Chip technology and AI export controls have been central issues in the U.S.–China trade dispute, with Beijing now encouraging domestic AI and semiconductor development to reduce reliance on U.S. suppliers.

Huang has often criticized restrictions from both sides, while balancing U.S. expansion efforts with maintaining stable relations with China.

Trump and Xi are scheduled to meet in South Korea on Thursday during the U.S. president’s Asia tour, amid renewed trade and technology tensions between the world’s two largest economies.
