U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that he could impose tariffs on countries that oppose his proposal for the United States to take control of Greenland.
Speaking during a health-related event at the White House, Trump said tariffs could be used as leverage against nations that do not support the Greenland plan, arguing that the territory is vital to U.S. national security.
Trump did not clarify which countries could be targeted by such measures, nor did he provide further details on how U.S. control of Greenland would be pursued. Greenland is currently a self-governing territory within the Denmark, a point that adds diplomatic sensitivity to the proposal.
