President Donald Trump said Tuesday he has no plans to extend the July 9 deadline for countries to finalize trade agreements with the United States.
Speaking with reporters aboard Air Force One during his return to Washington from Florida, Trump also cast doubt on the possibility of reaching a deal with Japan.
“We’ve been working with Japan, but I’m not sure we’ll get there. I don’t think we will,” he remarked.
Trump also floated the idea of imposing steeper tariffs on Japanese goods, suggesting rates of 30% or 35%, depending on what is ultimately decided. That would exceed the 24% tariff he announced on April 2, which was later put on hold.
