U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he is ending all trade negotiations with Canada in retaliation for the country’s newly implemented digital services tax targeting American tech firms.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump condemned the move as “a direct and blatant attack on our country,” accusing Canada of mimicking the European Union, which has introduced similar measures.
He further criticized Canada as “a very difficult country to TRADE with,” highlighting long-standing tensions over trade, including Canadian tariffs on U.S. dairy products, which he said have historically reached up to 400%.
Trump also signaled that his administration will impose new tariffs on Canadian imports within the next week, writing: “We will let Canada know the Tariff that they will be paying to do business with the United States of America within the next seven day period.”
