U.S. President Donald Trump announced new tariffs on Monday evening targeting lumber, furniture, and kitchen fittings. The move is aimed at boosting domestic production and reducing reliance on imported goods.

The proclamation sets a 10% tariff on imports of softwood lumber and timber, a 25% tariff on kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities, and a 25% tariff on upholstered wooden furniture. These tariffs will take effect on October 14.

The decision follows a Commerce Department investigation into wood product imports ordered by Trump earlier this year. The findings concluded that current import levels were weakening the U.S. economy and harming local wood mills and supply chains.

The report also highlighted that the United States has ample raw materials and industrial capacity to meet domestic demand for wood products.

Trump said the tariffs align with his broader strategy to reduce America’s dependence on imported goods and encourage local manufacturing. Last week, he announced tariffs on furniture and fittings, as well as a 100% tariff on pharmaceutical imports.
