Trump to Hold Friday Press Conference with Elon Musk on His Final Day in Administration
U.S. President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he will hold a joint press conference with Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) CEO Elon Musk at the Oval Office on Friday, marking what Trump called Musk’s final day in his official government role.
“I’ll be hosting a press conference tomorrow at 1:30 P.M. EST with Elon Musk in the Oval Office. It will be his last day — but not really — because he’ll always be part of our team, continuing to help in every way,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The announcement follows recent speculation surrounding Musk’s departure, after he suggested earlier this week that his time with the administration was coming to an end. Multiple reports confirmed that the White House had begun off-boarding procedures, and that Musk did not speak with Trump directly prior to his exit.
Although Musk had previously indicated he would gradually step back from his role in government, his exit was hastened following public criticism of Trump’s tax cut proposal, a key policy initiative of the administration.
Musk’s tenure as a special government employee was controversial. He led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which aimed to dramatically cut federal spending but ultimately fell short of its initial targets.
In an April Tesla earnings call, Musk had already signaled that he planned to reduce his involvement in public service and shift his attention back to his companies, amid growing investor pressure over concerns that Tesla operations were being neglected.
Musk’s actions in government, including massive cuts to federal staffing, were met with significant public backlash. That backlash extended to Tesla, triggering a nationwide boycott, as well as multiple acts of arson and vandalism targeting company facilities and vehicles.
