Trump Admin Weighed Allowing Nvidia’s H200 Sales to China

The Trump administration is considering whether to let Nvidia sell its H200 artificial intelligence chips to China, according to a Bloomberg report citing sources familiar with the talks.

Internal discussions on potential H200 shipments have taken place in recent days. However, no final decision has been reached, and the conversations may stay internal without leading to formal export approvals.

While the H200 is not as advanced as Nvidia’s top-tier Blackwell chips, it still offers strong performance and remains a valuable AI product.

The possible approval of H200 exports would mark a major shift from the administration’s earlier stance on chip controls. It would also signal a significant concession to Beijing and is expected to draw criticism from China-focused national security hawks in Washington. Allowing H200 sales would also ease existing U.S. trade restrictions aimed at limiting China’s access to high-end AI technology.

President Donald Trump previously hinted that he might discuss Nvidia’s most advanced chip exports with Chinese President Xi Jinping, though the subject did not come up during their recent meeting. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said that exporting the current Blackwell chips may become possible in one to two years, once they are no longer considered cutting-edge.
