Canada Ready to Resume Trade Talks with U.S. When Washington Is Prepared

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Friday that Canada is ready to restart trade negotiations with the United States once Washington is willing to return to the table.

“We stand ready to pick up on the progress made when the U.S. is ready,” Carney said, noting that U.S. trade policy has shifted in recent months. He added that while Canada cannot control U.S. trade decisions, it remains committed to dialogue and cooperation.

Carney Responds to Trump’s Decision to End Talks

Carney’s remarks followed comments by U.S. President Donald Trump, who announced on Thursday that trade talks with Canada were over. Trump made the statement on Truth Social, shortly after an Ontario political advertisement resurfaced featuring former U.S. President Ronald Reagan, warning about the dangers of tariffs and trade wars.

Despite the latest setback, Carney emphasized that Canadian officials have continued working on trade issues and that substantial progress had already been made before negotiations were paused.

Canada Shifts Focus to New Partnerships

Looking ahead, Carney said Canada will explore new trade partnerships, particularly across Asia, while keeping the door open for future discussions with the U.S..

“We’ve made meaningful progress and remain open to constructive engagement when our American counterparts are ready,” Carney added.

The comments underscore Canada’s readiness to resume talks and its balanced approach to global trade diversification amid ongoing U.S. policy changes.
