Tokyo Inflation Slows to Four-Year Low in March

Tokyo’s consumer price index (CPI) inflation slowed to its weakest pace in four years in March, as government measures to stabilize food and utility costs continued to ease price pressures. Core inflation also showed signs of cooling.

Headline CPI Growth Eases Further

According to official data released on Tuesday, headline CPI rose 1.4% in March. This marked a slight slowdown from the 1.5% increase recorded in February and represents the lowest inflation reading since March 2022.

Core Inflation Falls Below Expectations

Core CPI, which excludes volatile fresh food prices, increased by 1.7% in March. This came in below expectations of 1.8% and moved further below the Bank of Japan’s 2% inflation target.

Underlying Inflation Shows Continued Weakness

A broader measure of core inflation, which excludes both fresh food and energy prices, rose 2.3% in March. This was down from 2.5% in the previous month and marked the slowest pace of growth in 13 months.

This measure is closely monitored by the Bank of Japan as a key indicator of underlying inflation trends.

Government Measures Continue to Ease Price Pressures

Japan’s inflation has been gradually cooling in recent months, largely due to ongoing efforts by the Sanae Takaichi government to contain food and energy costs. These policies are expected to remain in place in the near term, especially as global energy markets face uncertainty linked to the Middle East conflict.

Bank of Japan Signals Future Rate Hikes

Despite the current slowdown, the Bank of Japan expects inflation to rise again later in the year. This outlook is based on the anticipated impact of reduced government subsidies and continued wage growth.

As a result, the central bank has indicated that further interest rate hikes may be introduced in the coming months if inflation begins to accelerate.
