Elon Musk said on Wednesday that Tesla will discontinue one-time sales of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software starting in February, shifting the product entirely to a subscription-based model.

In a post on X, Musk said Tesla will stop offering FSD for outright purchase after February 14, adding that the software will only be accessible through a monthly subscription going forward. The move effectively ends the option for customers to buy FSD as a permanent add-on.

At present, Tesla prices FSD at $8,000 for a one-time purchase or $99 per month via subscription, according to the company’s website. Over recent years, Tesla has repeatedly reduced the subscription price, a strategy widely seen as an effort to increase user adoption.

FSD is an advanced driver-assistance software package that builds on Tesla’s standard Autopilot features, offering additional automated driving capabilities. Despite its branding, the system is not fully autonomous. Tesla labels the software as “Supervised,” underscoring that drivers must remain attentive and ready to intervene at all times.

Musk has consistently highlighted autonomous driving technology and robotics as key long-term growth areas for Tesla. The strategic shift comes as the automaker faces slowing vehicle sales growth over the past two years, increasing its focus on software and recurring revenue streams.
