Spain’s Unemployment Rises in August, but Job Creation Continues

Spain’s unemployment rose by 0.91% in August compared to July, according to new data from the Labour Ministry. An additional 21,905 people registered as jobless, pushing the total number of unemployed to 2.43 million.

The increase follows seasonal trends in the Spanish labor market. Unemployment usually drops at the start of summer when the tourism sector hires temporary workers. However, joblessness tends to rise again once tourist numbers decline toward the end of the season.

Despite the uptick in unemployment, Spain’s Social Security Ministry reported continued job creation. The country added 29,836 new formal jobs in August. On a calendar-adjusted basis, the total number of positions now stands at 21.67 million, excluding seasonal effects.
