Switzerland Targets Early 2026 to Finalize Updated Trade Deal With China
Switzerland expects to conclude an updated free trade agreement with China in early 2026, according to Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis. His statement followed a bilateral meeting on Friday with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Bellinzona.
Cassis said that talks to modernize the existing trade pact were moving forward in a constructive way. “We are pleased that the discussions are progressing well, and both sides hope to complete this important work soon,” he told reporters after the meeting.
The Swiss foreign minister acknowledged that the negotiations will likely extend beyond the original goal of finishing by the end of this year. However, he added that both nations are aiming to finalize the deal at the start of next year, emphasizing the importance of a fair and open trade system grounded in international trade rules.
