The Kremlin said on Friday that it believes U.S. President Donald Trump is still actively working toward a settlement in Ukraine, despite his recent criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump has often voiced his frustration with Moscow’s continued strikes on Ukrainian targets, even while trying to broker a peace deal. Speaking at a joint press conference on Thursday with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump declared that Putin “has let me down.”
In response, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that Trump’s reaction was understandable. According to Russia’s RIA news agency, Peskov said: “We presume that the United States, and President Trump personally, have maintained the political will and the intention to expend efforts to facilitate a Ukrainian settlement.”
Peskov added that Trump is “quite emotional about this topic,” calling his reaction completely natural.
In the past, Putin and other Russian officials have praised Trump’s efforts to promote dialogue and organize high-level meetings aimed at ending the Ukraine conflict.
