Ledger Co-founder Eric Larchevêque Confirmed Safe Amidst False Kidnapping Rumors
Rumors about the alleged kidnapping of Eric Larchevêque, co-founder of Ledger, a leading cryptocurrency hardware wallet company, have been debunked. French media and investigative sources confirm that Larchevêque is safe, with no evidence or police reports to support the claims.
Kidnapping Rumors Surface
The alleged incident was said to have occurred in Mairé, a small town in central France where Larchevêque owns a home. Unverified sources initially suggested that abductors demanded a Bitcoin ransom, prompting supposed involvement from French police, including the GIGN, a specialized law enforcement unit.
However, reports from the Vienne region later cast doubt on the validity of these claims, with no credible evidence to confirm a kidnapping or ransom demand.
Investigative Journalist Urges Caution
Gregory Raymond, co-founder of the investigative platform The Big Whale, dismissed the rumors, emphasizing the absence of any proof supporting the allegations. Writing on X (formerly Twitter), Raymond cautioned against spreading unverified information that could potentially disrupt law enforcement efforts.
Similarly, French media outlet Le Fil d’Info described the allegations as likely exaggerated or fabricated. Despite these clarifications, the story gained traction within the cryptocurrency community, causing widespread concern.
Crypto Community Reacts
The conflicting reports prompted reactions from notable figures in the crypto world, including former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao (CZ). Commenting on X, CZ acknowledged the confusion surrounding the situation, expressing hope for Larchevêque’s safety.
“I am seeing posts about the former CEO of Ledger being kidnapped and asking for BTC as ransom. However, some posts are saying he is fine. I don’t know what is real for now, but I hope he is okay,” CZ stated.
No Official Statement from Ledger
Ledger, founded by Larchevêque in 2014 and renowned for its cryptocurrency hardware wallets, has not issued an official statement regarding the incident. The lack of communication from both the company and French authorities fueled speculation within the crypto community.
Confirmed Safety
Despite the initial panic, Larchevêque has been confirmed safe, and no evidence supports the claims of kidnapping or ransom demands. This situation highlights the risks of spreading unverified information, particularly in sensitive cases that could interfere with ongoing investigations.
The crypto community now awaits further clarification from official sources to close the chapter on this unsettling episode.
