Bitcoin Adoption Remains in Early Stages at 3% in 2025
Bitcoin adoption has seen a significant transformation in 2024, largely fueled by the approval of BTC ETFs. Despite being one of the most unique global assets, Bitcoin has gradually gained traction over the years. When it was first introduced in 2009 by the anonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, only a niche group of tech enthusiasts were aware of its potential. What once started as an experimental concept has evolved into a formidable financial force with the potential to reshape the global economy.
Political Influence on Bitcoin’s Market Performance
The political landscape in the U.S. played a crucial role in Bitcoin’s price movement towards the end of 2024. Following Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. elections in November 2024 and his pledge to position the U.S. as the crypto capital of the world, the market experienced a strong bullish trend. This surge propelled Bitcoin to an all-time high of over $108K in December 2024.
However, Bitcoin has since corrected and is currently trading at $88,383, significantly lower than its peak. A mix of macroeconomic instability and the rejection of the Bitcoin reserve bill by multiple U.S. states has contributed to the price decline. Despite these fluctuations, Bitcoin adoption has continued its upward trajectory.
Bitcoin Adoption Is Still in Its Infancy, Says River Intelligence
A recent report by River Intelligence reveals that Bitcoin adoption remains at just 3% in 2025, underscoring how early it still is in its growth cycle. Key indicators of this adoption include Total Addressable Market (TAM), institutional investment levels, and global ownership rates.
The report further highlights that Bitcoin’s adoption trend mirrors the evolution of the internet, despite being a financial asset. In 2025, Bitcoin is at a stage similar to where the internet was in 1990, social media in 2005, and online banking in 1996. Based on projected growth patterns, Bitcoin is expected to witness substantial adoption in the coming years.
