Trump Downplays Return to Iran Talks After Failed Negotiations
U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Sunday that he is unconcerned about whether Iran returns to negotiations, following the collapse of ceasefire talks over the weekend.
“I don’t care if they come back or not, if they don’t come back, we’re fine,” Trump said while speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews.
US Confirms Hormuz Blockade Plans
Trump also confirmed that the United States will move forward with a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz starting Monday morning. He accused Iran of failing to uphold its commitment to reopen the vital global shipping route.
Diplomatic Efforts Continue Behind the Scenes
Despite the breakdown in talks, diplomatic efforts are still ongoing. Reports indicate that several countries are working to bring Washington and Tehran back to the negotiating table.
A second round of discussions could potentially take place within days, while regional governments are also attempting to extend a fragile two-week ceasefire announced earlier in the week.
Historic Talks End Without Agreement
The negotiations in Islamabad marked the highest-level direct engagement between U.S. and Iranian officials since 1979. Talks lasted approximately 21 hours but ultimately ended without a deal.
U.S. Vice President JD Vance stated that Washington had clearly outlined its conditions, but Iran declined to accept them.
Key Disagreements Between US and Iran
According to reports, U.S. demands included a complete halt to uranium enrichment, dismantling of major nuclear facilities, and the transfer of enriched nuclear material خارج the country.
Additional conditions involved reopening the Strait of Hormuz without tolls, establishing broader regional peace, and ending support for proxy groups such as Hezbollah and the Houthis.
Iran, however, proposed more limited concessions, including reducing its enriched uranium stockpile, but the two sides failed to reach common ground.
Iran Responds with Firm Stance
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf responded strongly to the developments, stating that Iran would not yield to pressure.
Addressing Trump directly, he warned, “If you fight, we will fight,” signaling a potential escalation in tensions.
US to Enforce Iran Port Blockade
The United States is set to begin enforcing a blockade on maritime traffic linked to Iranian ports from 10:00 AM ET on April 13. U.S. Central Command confirmed that the measures will apply to vessels of all nations operating in Iranian waters, including areas along the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman.
NATO Tensions Add to Uncertainty
It remains unclear whether U.S. allies will participate in the blockade. Trump criticized NATO for not supporting U.S. actions against Iran and indicated that Washington is reassessing its relationship with the alliance.
