Former UFC champion Conor McGregor, now running as an independent candidate for Ireland’s presidency, has proposed the creation of a national Bitcoin reserve as a key part of his campaign platform.

McGregor, who transitioned from mixed martial arts to politics, voiced support for Bitcoin as a tool to restore financial control to citizens. “Crypto was born to return power to the people. An Irish Bitcoin strategic reserve will empower the people’s money,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter) on May 9.

He also announced plans to elaborate on his Bitcoin initiative during an upcoming X Spaces discussion and invited leading voices from the crypto industry to participate. Responding to podcast host and crypto influencer Anthony Pompliano, McGregor said, “We need the best minds for this BTC reserve. Message me—let’s talk on my Space.”

David Bailey, a crypto advisor to U.S. President Donald Trump, also reached out to McGregor, who replied enthusiastically: “David, message me, let’s discuss your ideas!”

McGregor launched his presidential campaign in late March 2025, running on a platform that emphasizes strict immigration controls and tougher crime policies. Ireland’s next presidential election is scheduled for no later than November 11, 2025, as current President Michael D. Higgins’ term ends the following day.

Launching a national Bitcoin reserve, especially from an independent candidate, would be a significant challenge. To date, only a handful of nations—including the U.S., El Salvador, and Bhutan—have formalized any form of Bitcoin reserves.

McGregor has recently gained more political exposure, including a visit to the White House where he met with Trump, who expressed support for him.

However, McGregor’s candidacy faces controversy at home. He was recently found liable for sexual assault in a civil case, a verdict he is appealing. He has also previously been under investigation for hate speech violations in Ireland.

Previous Crypto Effort Fell Short

McGregor’s current crypto push comes just weeks after his earlier blockchain venture, the REAL token project, failed to meet funding goals. The initiative, led by Real World Gaming and backed by McGregor, raised only $392,315 in its 28-hour presale on April 5–6—well below its $1 million minimum. All investor funds were refunded.
