Microsoft Unveils AI-Powered Copilot Mode for Edge Browser

Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) has introduced a new “Copilot Mode” for its Edge browser, using artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the browsing experience. This new feature was launched on Monday and aims to give users smarter, more efficient ways to interact with the web.

Copilot Mode helps users complete online tasks, organize searches into topic-based groups, and compare results across all open tabs—without needing to switch between them. Microsoft says this AI feature is designed to simplify complex browsing behavior.

The launch comes as the AI browser market heats up. Nvidia-backed Perplexity AI recently released its Comet browser, and OpenAI is rumored to be developing an AI-driven browser of its own.

Meanwhile, Google’s parent company Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) rolled out “AI Mode” earlier this year. This search-only AI tool has shown a boost in user engagement, according to recent reports.

Microsoft’s Copilot Mode offers a single input box that merges search, chat, and navigation. It also supports voice browsing, providing a hands-free experience for Edge users.

Looking ahead, Microsoft plans to let users give Copilot access to more personalized data—such as browsing history and login credentials. This will enable the tool to handle tasks like booking reservations or managing errands, all within the browser.

Importantly, Microsoft assures users that Copilot will only access private browsing data when explicitly allowed. Visual indicators will show when Copilot is active in the background.

Copilot Mode is available for free in supported Copilot markets on both Windows and Mac devices—for a limited time. Users can turn the feature off anytime in their Edge browser settings
