A large explosion and fire broke out at Chevron’s refinery in El Segundo on Thursday night, sending flames across the South Bay area, the LA Times reported.

The blast occurred around 9:30 p.m. when residents reported a powerful shockwave. Videos showed a massive fireball with a loud, extended roar before the blaze subsided within an hour.

City officials said there was no immediate public danger, and no evacuation orders were issued. However, parts of north Manhattan Beach were placed under shelter-in-place orders until 2 a.m.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly Mitchell told KCAL-TV that the fire was mostly contained by 10:30 p.m., with no injuries reported. She advised nearby residents to stay indoors as air quality was being monitored.

El Segundo Mayor Chris Pimentel confirmed the blaze was contained within the refinery grounds and that all workers were accounted for. The cause of the explosion is still under investigation as firefighters continue their response.
