Arm Unveils New AI Chip in Major Strategic Shift
Arm Holdings has introduced a new artificial intelligence data center chip, marking a significant shift in its business model. The company expects the new product to generate billions of dollars in annual revenue, signaling a move beyond its traditional licensing-based approach.
AGI CPU Targets Next-Generation AI Workloads
The newly launched chip, called the AGI CPU, is designed to handle complex data processing required by a new wave of artificial intelligence systems. Unlike traditional chatbots, this type of AI—often referred to as agentic AI—can operate with minimal human input and perform tasks autonomously.
This growing segment of AI is driving increased demand for high-performance processors, benefiting companies across the semiconductor industry.
Rising Demand for AI Chips Boosts Market Momentum
The surge in demand for AI-focused computing power has already supported chipmakers such as Intel and AMD. Arm is now positioning itself to capture a larger share of this expanding market.
Following the announcement, Arm shares rose by around 1% in early trading, extending their gains to approximately 25% so far this year.
From Licensing to Chip Production
Historically, Arm has focused on licensing its chip designs to major technology companies like Qualcomm and Nvidia, earning revenue through royalties on device sales.
However, the company recently began investing in developing its own chips—a move that requires substantial capital and operational expansion. The AGI CPU represents the first product under this new strategy.
CEO Rene Haas described the launch as a “pivotal moment” for the company, highlighting its importance in shaping Arm’s future direction.
Strategic Partnerships and Development Pipeline
The AGI CPU project is being led by Mohamed Awad, head of Arm’s cloud AI division. The company plans to release additional chip designs every 12 to 18 months, signaling a long-term commitment to the AI hardware space.
Meta Platforms is serving as the lead partner for the new chip, collaborating closely with Arm on its development. Other key customers include OpenAI, Cloudflare, SAP, and SK Telecom.
Advanced Manufacturing and Production Plans
The chip is being manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company using advanced 3-nanometer technology. It features a dual-silicon design that functions as a unified processor.
Arm has already received working test versions of the chip and plans to begin large-scale production in the second half of the year.
Expanding Into Full AI Systems
Beyond the chip itself, Arm is also working with server manufacturers such as Lenovo and Quanta Computer to deliver complete AI system solutions, further strengthening its position in the data center market.
Financial Outlook Remains Strong
According to market estimates, Arm is expected to report earnings of $1.75 per share on revenue of approximately $4.91 billion for the current fiscal year, reflecting continued growth driven by AI demand.
