AI Talent War Heats Up: OpenAI Brings in Ex-Apple AI Head from Meta

OpenAI has reportedly hired Ruomin Pang, an artificial intelligence researcher who most recently worked at Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) and previously led Apple’s AI models team, according to a report by The Information.

Pang joined Meta roughly seven months ago after spending at least four years at Apple, where he headed the Apple Foundation Model team, based on details from his LinkedIn profile. As of now, Investing.com has not independently confirmed his move to OpenAI.

The competition for top AI talent has intensified significantly over the past year. Leading AI developers such as OpenAI and Anthropic, alongside major technology companies like Meta, have been aggressively pursuing high-profile researchers to strengthen their artificial intelligence capabilities.

Meta, in particular, has reportedly offered substantial compensation packages—sometimes reaching into the hundreds of millions of dollars—to attract leading AI experts. The company has also been known to recruit talent directly from OpenAI, highlighting the growing rivalry among major players in the AI sector.
