Google has rolled out a major update to AI Mode in Search, giving users the ability to explore and shop visually through conversational interactions.

The new feature is launching this week in English across the United States. It allows users to ask questions in natural language and receive visual search results that can be refined step by step.

For example, someone looking for “maximalist design inspiration” for a bedroom can instantly view curated visuals. They can then refine results by requesting specific elements, such as dark tones or bold prints.

The update also transforms online shopping. Instead of navigating through countless filters, users can simply describe what they want. A query like “barrel jeans that aren’t too baggy” will return shoppable product images that can be further refined with additional requests.

Each image shown includes a link to learn more or purchase the item. The system runs on Google’s Shopping Graph, which contains over 50 billion product listings worldwide, with around 2 billion updated every hour.

This technology integrates Google Lens and Image Search capabilities with Gemini 2.5’s multimodal AI. Using a method called “visual search fan-out,” Google can recognize not just main objects but also subtle details and secondary elements in images.

On mobile, the experience goes further: users can search within a specific image by asking follow-up questions about what they see.
